Taking The Measure Of Success

Brace yourselves: it's not all about money

Everyone wants to profit from their small business work, but the definition of 'profit' may vary from person to person.

To echo the old spam meme, MAKE MONEY FA$T!!! represents what the typical person imagines as the motivation to enter the world of small business. Find a niche, fill it well, work a lot of hours, and keep the revenue stream flowing inward.

Hard as it may be to believe, some small business owners look for profitability in other ways. Small Business Labs said their conversations with entrepreneurs found a couple of motivations besides the ones of the Presidential portrait on green paper variety.

Some small business people get into a field as an extension of a passion, like a hobby. Their passions form the aims of the business. Pursuing the aims of the business allows them to indulge in that interest every day; think about the example of the fisherman running a deep sea charter, for example.

Others like the lifestyle approach, where the business suits the founder's schedule, rather than the founder trying to meet demands that put them on a treadmill of expectations. Like the passion businesses, there's little drive to grow these beyond a certain level.

But if one's situation permits them to serve a niche well, while maintaining their passions or lifestyles, a given business should be a good fit for them.

Love that work!

I work with online business owners every day, helping them build profitable businesses. One thing I will not do is take on a client who just wants to make money. Oddly, it doesn't work that way. If all you want to do is make money, there are probably easier ways of doing it than going online. Nor do I demand full, undiluted passion for a topic. Reality usually falls somewhere in between. The business will require hundreds upon hundreds of hours of very dedicated work to make it successful, so it better be a topic that you enjoy. It's nice if it's a topic you know something about. That's when an online business can become very, very successful. That spark that people feel about a topic, any topic, just flows through to the pages of the site. Feeling genuinely excited about an idea generates such trust that a solid business is bound to follow.
