Tips On Corporate Blogging From Matt Cutts

If it's good enough for Google . . .

Within the search engine optimization industry, Matt Cutts's name is synonymous with Google.  He's an engineer who goes out of his way to discuss new features and corporate policies, and audiences have responded well to his tips and tone.  So new advice on "company blogging" from Cutts seems worth mentioning.

Admittedly, Google's market cap of $146 billion puts it a little out of the usual range of small businesses, and Cutts does all his writing on something other than an official blog.  We'll hit his tips, though, so you can see their applicability for yourself.

First, Cutts writes, "Don't make hard promises about the future."  If something's still in development, you may want to make some changes or delay the final stage.  Or a supplier could go bankrupt or an asteroid might hit your main store, so there's no point in not using terms like "plan to" and "should."

Next, he suggests, "Don't trash talk a competitor.  Your product should be strong enough that you don't have to diss a competing company."  Also, "Sometimes other companies will throw dirt in your direction.  In that case, the challenge is to correct any misperceptions without picking a fight.  But first ask yourself: do you really need to respond at all?  If not, then maybe it's better not to get pulled into an argument where everyone involved loses a little credibility."

The final tip is something of a follow-up: "Don't post when you're angry."  The entire future of your business shouldn't get risked due to an emotion that will pass in less than 24 hours.

Not bad advice, right?  And if following it can make you look even the slightest bit like the giant Google, all the better.

Muscat Blog

Is it best to have the blog as part of a domain or on a stand along site ? like wordpress

As always good advice

Good advice, though advice that we would probably be well advised to apply whether it's writing a blog, writing an email or talking to people face to face - it comes down to the same thing really! :)

@Muscat - ref: blog on own site or separate. it depends on what you want your blog to achieve and whether it's complementary to your website, but in general as part of your website is going to bring more benefit to you. I've written a fuller answer on my Better Business Blogging site if that helps.

Great tip

I like this article. Really inspiring. Please let me share this saying:

"Don't make decisions when clouded with emotions. Because it affects judgment."

So True

This is great advice that actually can be applied to every level of the blogosphere, from business right down to the personal blog level; I have seen some interesting mud-slinging recently on various levels - unfortunately.

Thanks

This is a good article. Thank you for the advice.

Corporate Blogging

This is a wonderful article.  One should never write when angry and as one commenter points out that this should apply to all aspects of business including in-person and telephone conversations.  Cool off and think of alternatives that will defuse the situation.

One thing that can work well on a blog, website, letter or in-person is a personal testimonial by a satisfiend customer or client.  For in-person, you could reference a satisfiend customer or client, but be sure to get permission from the reference before using their name.  If you are in the healthcare field, you will need a signed release to use someone as a satisfied referal or reference, because of HIPPA regulations--this is probably a good idea to get a signed permission release in all business fields.
