Are You Advertising with Online Video?

If not, you might get left behind.

If you haven't noticed, online video is becoming quite popular, and it stands to reason that opportunities for video advertising are increasing right along with that popularity.

Sure, ads in online videos aren't nearly as popular as the videos themselves. Actually, they tend to annoy users who just want to watch a TV show or whatever. It's really not that different than television, except that ad time in online video tends to be much shorter, so the ads don't drive users away.

Ads are how many online video providers monetize their sites though, and they are going to have ads regardless, so they might as well be your ads. In a recent SmallBizTechnology interview with Spot Runner, the company shared some interesting stats:

We’re seeing a big demand for online video services across the board, a trend that is supported by industry data. Leading market research firm, The Kelsey Group, recently released a study indicating that the local online video market will see an increase in growth from $10.9 million in 2007 to $1.5 billion in 2012, a compound annual growth rate of 167.8 percent.

Apart from true online video, Google has even made it easier to get your video ads on television. They just signed a deal with NBC Universal that will see them putting ads for clients on the network's stations such as MSNBC, CNBC, Sci-Fi, Oxygen, Sleuth, and Chiller. If all goes well, they will likely add more stations as well - possibly even NBC.

The interesting part about this is that you can manage your ads from the same place as your Google AdWords account. So think about how easy it would be to transition the ads you make for online rotation to traditional television.

Another interesting nugget that surfaced today, is a new Video Search Engine, VideoSurf, which is said to be the most innovative and relevant of its kind. Search experts are already predicting big things for it and it's not even been released to the public yet.

Getting video ads out there is in your best interest. You may want to consider a viral approach (like is also mentioned in the Spot Runner interview) for the most success with the video search engines. This goes for YouTube as well. If you can create a video that brands your product in a fun, entertaining way, people will watch it and spread the word. This can also be integrated with your social media marketing efforts.

The bottom line is: online video is getting bigger. You don't want to be left behind and miss out on potential customers because you don’t have a presence.

Youtube

I've got videos on a lot of video sites, but youtube reigns supreme. In fact, youtube brings me my most traffic of all referrers.

If the video is interesting or useful, people will spread the word and the video can become popular.

Ads in the video can be useful, but the best method in my experience is to consider the whole video an ad in itself.

Video Advertising

Hi Chris,

I agree wholeheartedly.  While video advertisements are not surprisingly becoming more popular, most of us are fed up with boring commercials.  We have all had enough of those forced on us on TV and are looking for ways to avoid them.  Plus not everyone wants or is able to spend a small fortune on production.  We have found one solution in the form of product placement in funny videos.  This makes viewers AND clients happy.

Thanks for the great article.

How Can Online Video Help Small Business

Here are some video facts;
YouTube is responsible for as much as 12% of all online traffic.
Over 12 billion videos are played on the internet each month.
Every month almost three quarters of all internet users stream or watch video on their computers.

Online video is no longer about young people performing dangerous stunts to amuse their friends. Think about this, Google purchased YouTube in October of 2006 for a reported $1.6 billion dollars. Do you think they know something we should pay attention to?

What can video do for you?
Engage your visitors at a deeper level.

I agree with you, good article, thank you.

Video may be on the rise, but users still skeptical

Interesting post Chris!

We're finding the biggest barrier to entry is the sheer volume of new possibilities that online video poses to businesses - should we vodcast or preroll? Youtube or Google adword video? It's almost like an alien language to business owners who have grown up with traditional print and TV advertising. And not all people understand that video doesn't have to be those annoying pop up ads that bug people!

I run an Australian marketing company that specialises in creating online video content ( www.soularchmedia.com) and we're finding that apart from the Real estate and travel industries - which have both been quick to adopt all forms of online video as an advertising medium - most of ourother clients are larger companies that can afford to dabble in alternative forms of marketing online. Even though the cost of getting a film crew to produce yourvideo has dropped dramatically in recent years, it's still too much of a gamble for your average small business owner. So even though numerous studies show online video is cheaper and often more effective than print ads, people stick to what they know - online video is still seems a bit new and untested and therefore a bit daunting for most people.

To try combat this we're working on a product that makes the production process simpler AND cheaper. It's called Instant Video Advertising ( www.instantvideoadvertising.com) and it cuts the cost of film production by using a company's existing promotional photos, imagery and logos and adding a voice-over and sountrack to create affordable video ads, then distributes them online free. We haven't officially launched yet, so it's all speculation and hard to say whether it will catch on, but as we're not the only company out there trying to make online video accesible to small businesses,I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot of movement in the budget video ad sector in months to come.

Low Cost Videos?

Hi Chris (and Caz, too...)

One of my companies, www.martialartspride.com, has been approached by several mma news sites practically begging for us to provide them with video content that they would distribute for free.

Here's the problem...

We don't really know how to produce video and we definitley don't want to put something out there of very poor quality that could adversely affect our reputation.  Do you have any suggestions for producing relatively good quality videos (say a 60 to 90 second entertaining spot) without breaking the bank?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Where are you located Clark?

More than happy to suggest a few good-yet-inexpensive production companies if I know where you are based.

Basically there are three major companies with extensive global videographer networks;  Turn Here, Globeshooter (recently bought by Spotrunner) and Trivop. These are basically the 'big chains', so you're assured a quality standard but you usually pay premium price for their services. Then you've got smaller niche companies focusing on market segments ( like real estate etc) and multitudes of freelance operators.  Prices vary pretty wildly from business to business, so it's really worth doing your homework! You can pay a few hundred right on up to tens of thousands depending on the company you choose.

Or if you are really on a tight budget, you can try a service like www.instantvideoadvertising.com  that I mentioned last post. It puts custom ads together for $99 and even distributes them online free.  This can be done for businesses anywhere in the world - location is not an issue.

You see it all really depends on what kind of budget you call 'breaking the bank', but whatever your spending limit there's plenty of options!
