Text Ads May Get More Clicks, But...

Some Interesting Findings from iPerceptions

A recent study shows some noteworthy stats about consumer preference when it comes to different forms of online advertising. Hightlights include:

- 25% of respondents more likely to click on simple text ads

- 20% for right banner ads

- 12% for top banner ads

- 11% for video ads

The study seeems to try and dispell the notion that video advertising is worth the time and money for businesses. This is pretty much the opposite of what I've been saying. What should be taken into consideration here, however, is that iPerceptions seems to be referring to clickable video ads, whereas I tend to favor videos in more of a viral sense.

If you are looking for instant gratification in the form of clicks, than these stats probably hold more meaning, but that doesn't mean that you should forget about videos, because there is no question that they are a better branding tool. I dont' have any hard data for this, but I would go so far as to say that you could almost reverse the order of these stats when it comes to branding. I happen to think the more visual an ad is, the more likely it is likely to stick with the viewer and leave a lasting impression. Text ads, being the least visual, are probably not going to leave an impact in the minds of the audience the way a viral video or even a banner ad ( as I have discussed before) will.

I'm not saying don't use text ads. All of the aforementioned varieties of advertising can be effective if executed well, and they certainly all have their merits. Perhaps you should evaluate just what you are hoping to achieve with each one though. Branding or clicks? Keep in mind the whole "garbage clicks" issue comes into play as well. Clicks are great, but they're not everything. A brand is invaluable.

Brands stick around. Brands survive. Brands are remembered.

What recent study is this

What recent study is this from? Why didn't you link to it or cite a reference?

RE: what recent study was this

I'm sorry. I'm not sure why i didn't throw the link in. It was a study from iPerceptions. Here's the release in any case. I'll add the link into the article as well.

Couldn't agree more

I have also come across a couple of other studies conducted with slightly different sample sizes that reported similar results. Don’t have the links at the moment, but it’s all out there. I couldn’t agree with you more on this one Chris. Your brand name is all you’ve got!

Good points, but what about the conversion rates?

In other words, do you have any stats for the different conversion rates of each ad type as well?

On my hemorrhoids site, I found text ads had much better click through than banner ads, but text ads had a dissappointingly much lower conversion rate as well.

In fact, the type of ad made no difference to total sales - I don't yet use video ads - would love to know what their conversion rates are.

You can probably cut those

You can probably cut those text ad conversion figures per impression as a lot of them go unnoticed or only get clicked on by accident.

Having it is better than ...

I think that having the text links in any site is much better than not having it.

Having some text links, which I heard it is easy to follow text links for robots, it is a good advantage to get more inbound or outbound pages indexed.

Maybe I am wrong, but I have experience it myself. Anyway, this post has very interesting information & comments.

Thanks from limo.

I prefer a mixture

I usually prefer a mixture of different styles of ads. The visual style (as stated in the Post) work better for branding and text for clicks.

I've been looking into creating some entertaining videos for youtube and others strickly for the branding.

These are excellent numbers

These are excellent numbers that should help any business hoping to success figure out where to place their ad budget.
