Government Misses Small Business Contract Goals

Over $5 billion likely sent to bigger companies

We know that, at this point in the election process, many of you probably want to escape the political mess and declare your house and yard a sovereign nation.  Here's a tidbit that may make the urge even stronger: in the fiscal year 2007, the U.S. government didn't support small businesses to the degree it had previously promised.

The Small Business Administration recently said that small businesses received 22 percent of federal contracting dollars.  The goal was 23 percent, and where huge amounts of cash are concerned, a single percentage point definitely matters.

Then, to make the situation worse, Kent Hoover notes, "This year, SBA officials said they think $5 billion or so of the $83.2 billion recorded as small business contracts in fiscal 2007 may have actually gone to large businesses, but they don't know for sure.  The SBA didn't subtract these suspicious dollars from the 2007 small business total."

Members of Congress are making a fuss over the mistakes, but nothing exciting - imagine small businesses getting sent checks by way of compensation - has happened yet.  Punishment seems to be limited to a tongue lashing.

Perhaps we could all spend our lunch hours tomorrow starting on gigantic fences instead of visiting the voting booths.

Government Misses Small Business Contract Goals

If you look at the 15 federal investigations that have been done on this issue since 2003, you will see that the real number of small business contracts going to large firms numbers somewhere closer to the $60 billion figure. The $5 billion in "mistakes" that the SBA claims for last years numbers is taken from a sample and not the entire population of small business contracts. Even based on the numbers used by the Washington Post in their investigations show that at least 40% of all small business contracts went to Fortune 500 firms, and that does not even count other large businesses.

The so-called outrage from members of Congress is laughable. If Kerry and Velazquez were really that outraged, then why have they never introduced a single piece of legislation that would solve this problem. The have been running the Senate and House Small Business Committee's for almost 2 years, and all we have seen is legislation that will benefit big business and venture capitalists.
