Global Entrepreneurship Week Continues

Lots of nations, VIPs honor it

It's Wednesday, November 19th, which means we're halfway through Global Entrepreneurship Week.  Perhaps you haven't heard about it by now - it's not exactly headline news - but this "celebration of enterprising behaviour" is being noted in some big ways.

A full 77 countries are acknowledging it, with 13,000 events and 5 million participants according to the official site.  Some of the more important individuals who have recognized Global Entrepreneurship Week include Gordon Brown, Nicholas Sarkozy, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Richard Branson, and Steve Wozniak.  Plus John Cleese, who's just awesome.

This demonstrates a refreshing worldwide interest in small businesses.  Since the week's activities and message are mostly aimed at non-adults, it may not directly benefit existing companies, but a sort of long-term commitment is also good.  Supporters seem to be looking beyond the current financial crisis and seeing something positive.

Gordon Brown said in a statement, "Global Entrepreneurship Week will reach millions of young people - half a million in Britain alone, and to each one of them my challenge is this: Believe in your ideas and make them happen.  Because entrepreneurial spirit changes the world and it changes it for good. . . .  You can be making a difference, so be bold, be imaginative, be brilliant."

It's a nice little pep talk to get you through Thursday and Friday, anyway.
