Small Businesses Encouraged To Act Their Size

Corporate frills, trappings not always necessary

A business with a proper headquarters and hundreds of employees has, at least in theory, proved that it can make money and succeed to some degree.  A small, home-based business doesn't always have quite the same credentials.  But it's probably best not to waste too much effort on imitating giants.

In many ways, such work would be misdirected.  A professional phone system is functional, for example, but most customers would prefer to have a human pick up on the second ring.  Or suppose a person was trying to get someone like Norm Abrams to make a piece of furniture.  Automated emails and check-a-box forms would take a lot of charm out of the situation.

Copying big companies might come off as dishonest, too.  Dawn Rivers Baker writes, "You can call it smoke and mirrors or presenting a good appearance or whatever you like.  It still feels like lying to me.  And, on some level, it still conveys that old idea that having a small business is something to be ashamed of."

So there are situations in which big business envy will be pointless.  There are scenarios in which it'll be bad.  And in most cases, it'll waste time and money.

Dropping any pretensions might be a wise way of conserving resources and simplifying things.
