Less-Than-Obvious Spending Pointers

Save money in unusual places

If you're reading this post from a mansion on the edge of Yellowstone National Park, go ahead and click the "back" button; the following info won't apply.  But since just about everybody else can use money-saving tips, here are a few that may not be too common.

Credit for the ideas goes to Janine Popick, and fittingly enough, she starts out on the subject of credit cards.  While we all know about basics like interest rates and annual fees for whatever's in your wallet, Popick suggests, "Call your bank and see if it's possible to lower the percentages you have to pay when someone uses a credit card to buy your product.  A fee reduction of only a percentage point or two can save your business thousands of dollars."

Try to save thousands of pages, too.  If people are printing out emails left and right, you'll be wasting all sorts of paper and toner.  Keep things on the computer, instead, and the electricity bill shouldn't be noticeably larger.

Then, rather than attempting to cut costs while staring at your workspace, try switching your focus to the company break room.  Do you offer bottled water instead of just sticking a purifier on the faucet?  Or maybe you quickly go through nice napkins and plastic cutlery when you could buy cheap paper towels and some permanent, metal forks and knives.

There are some starter concepts, anyway.  We'd be happy to hear any other solutions short of working in the dark and cold.

Always looking..

I'm a one man band of a business with my safety and security web site but I'm always looking for ways to cut costs. Thanks, Doug, for these tips.

I like the tip of calling your bank to lower rates

hi, i like your idea of calling your bank to lower your rates. Many banks, like companies are also feeling the economic pinch and do not want toloose customers to another bank with lower rates.

I'm sure they'd be willing to work withyou.

Sincerely,

Save on Paper

We keep two cartridges of paper in the printer.  One is clean paper for important documents that I will keep.  The other cartridge is filled with paper that already has been printed on one side.  We use this for unimportant articles about fantasy baseball  or jokes and other personal stuff that will get tossed after reading.

Environmental "Cents"

Using the water purifier will also save many plastic containers from spending eternity in the landfill.

Less paper used = more trees and oxygen for us to breath for free.....

Get rid of the bottled water!

I was using water filters to save money for a while but they would break pretty easily (I am talking about Pur filters) so I switched to a water cooler. Its not as expensive as you would think only $28 per month. It costs less and you dont have to feel like a block head for using up a bunch of plastic. I wish I would have done it a lot sooner.
