Holiday parties are the perfect opportunities for stressed individuals to blow off a little steam and be happy.  Things can go wrong, though - imagine drunk driving arrests and sexual harassment lawsuits wiping out half the office - so the National Federation of Independent Business has a few tips on how to throw a safe get-together.

Is the NFIB being something of a spoilsport?  Well, yes.  Responsible employees might find a few of its ideas patronizing, and other suggestions will wind up costing the businesses behind parties extra money.  Still, we'll move forward with the "better safe than sorry" saying in mind.

The NFIB recommended in a statement, "Hold the event off company premises.  Make sure that the party is completely voluntary.  Hire bartenders and distribute drink tickets.  Serve heavy foods throughout the night.  Appoint supervisors/monitors from among your employees."

Also, "Provide either hotel accommodations or transportation, and [r]emind employees about any company policies on conduct, substance abuse, or sexual harassment that apply to the party."

Do all this, and the lawyers should be happy, at least.  Or you can spare yourself and employees the trouble and just give holiday bonuses that might be appreciated more than the best possible party.
