Has Online Shopping Already Peaked for the Year?

Maybe, maybe not. Either way, get ready for the post-holiday rush.

I would have thought that online shopping would peak on Cyber Monday or Black Friday, but it was actually a Sunday - November 30th, that the most people got online and shopped, at least in the UK. This information comes from Hitwise who has provided data about UK Internet traffic to shopping and classifieds sites:

Well the year's not over yet right? What about last-minute holiday shopping? What about post-holiday shopping. Sure people will have plenty to do once they get their gift cards and cash from loved ones.

"This peak may seem early, but in fact a similar thing happened last year, when UK Internet visits to Shopping and Classifieds websites reached their highest pre-Christmas level on November 25th 2007," explains Robin Goad of Hitwise. "However, the overall peak in visits to online retailers last holiday season actually occurred after Christmas, on Boxing Day. Given the economic conditions and British consumers’ hunger for bargains and discounts, it seems likely that the post Christmas period will be even more important this year."

We'll see over the course of the rest of the month whether traffic has actually peaked for the year, or if the largest amount of customers is yet to come. Judging from last year, businesses would do well to prepare for a surge in traffic for after the holidays. If you missed the boat on getting ready for Cyber Monday and all of that jazz, you may at least still have a chance to attract some of the next wave of online shoppers.

While this data is all based on UK statistics, it doesn't really matter where you are operating from. You should be prepared regardless. The numbers aren't really what's important here. The assumption that customers will be looking to shop online (and off for that matter) right after the holidays is what you should consider.

Only time will tell

Although the recession is having an effect on online sales, I think it will also make consumers more likely to go for the "best value" proposition. So any businesses which can capitalize on this will be the ones that come out ahead... if you aren't being price competitive you may indeed feel the pinch. My 2c.

Black Friday and Cyber

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are both directly linked to the US Thanksgiving holiday. As this is not celebrated in the UK there is no reason why these days would have any significance with regards to sales there.

RE: Black Friday and Cyber

That makes sense. In hindsight, I probably shouldn't have mentioned them. Guess I've just gotten sucked into the hoopla surrounding both as research firms seem to keep blasting out info about them.

What places are good for the next wave

I am new to all this I am a small business and were do i put up my ads for this next wave of customers. And to you have to pay for all of them.

RE: What places are good for the next wave

Maybe this will help.

Online Shopping Peaked?

Perhaps temporarily, depends on the product, in my opinion. As in my case, car care with synthetics, travel, and a health fruit beverage, the holiday season is when people have time to sit at their PC and lap tops. It's a good time to research and place orders. During these holidays, our house is full of family three or more laptops are smokin' busy, thanks to the wifi, with stuff that keeps happy time rollin'.

The next crunch will come when sellers and shippers will have problems delivering to cacooned "seniors" in condos with no mail room or efficient way to accept parcels.

RE: Online shopping peaked?

True. Products and type of business certainly factor in.

Multiple streams of income

Chis, Excellent point. This is also why it is becoming increasingly important to develop multiple streams of income for any business, online or off. It is probably easier to do it with an online business, and is every bit as profitable.

Online shopping increase in buyers

Online shopping increase in buyers

We have recorded record number of buyers this year, with more people purchasing goods for the home.  The Season break for christmas has always seen fairly high traffic, however 2009 has seen a large increase in traffic and buyers online.  With consumers looking for better value more and more we have seen sales in items such as a mattress soar to double figures on a weekly basis.

The most important factor is clearly Price and delivery, thats we opted for a free delivery service within the united kingdom, as well as a price match policy on the same item sold elsewhere.

2010 promises further growth and we are relishing the traffic increase as well as new customers and browsers on our ecommerce website.

Another growth area in the Hospitality market as we have seen large traffic on hotel websites.  The most popular in the llandudno hotel that has reached thousands of viewers on the website in December alone.
