100 Tips for Growing Your Small Business

Countdown of Email Marketing Tips

Email marketing company Campaigner, which I have cited several times recently in other articles, has been piecing together a series of email marketing tips called "100 Days to Grow Your Business." This has basically been a countdown of tips leading up to the holidays.

"Although designed for small business retailers, many of the email marketing tips apply to all types of small businesses who can use the practical information any time of the year to help them build stronger, more profitable relationships with their existing customers, find new customers and create more sales opportunities across the board," a Campaigner representative tells me.

Tips from the countdown include things like:

- Determine what you really want to accomplish
- Review what worked and didn’t last year
- Give shopping incentives to the recession conscious consumer
- Don’t just sell, engage
- Avoid “SPAMMY” words
- Follow the ABC’s of A/B tests
- Stress your shipment delivery dates
- Say thank you
- Men are last-minute shoppers
- Treat subscribers like VIPs

"We designed the 100 Days countdown for retailers during the holiday sales season, but most of the tips can apply at any time of the year to businesses of all types and sizes,” said Luc Vezina, Campaigner’s head of marketing. “Initial sales reports from comScore, Inc. showed Cyber Monday sales increased by 15 percent over 2007.  Many of those sales were driven by free shipping, special promotions and big bargain discounts, and email marketing played an important role in getting the word out and bringing shoppers online and into the stores to make holiday purchases.”

There are obviously a lot more tips in the countdown of 100, and if you are seriously considering email marketing, or if you are already doing it, I would suggest going through them. You will likely learn some news strategies that will have a positive impact on your email marketing campaigns.

#5 Is A Great One

Timing your email campaign is beyond critical.  I can tell you from operating our email campaign that Mondays and Fridays are horrible days to send out emails.

Why? Because your inbox is going to be flooded with Out of Office auto-responses.  The second part is when that person returns to hundreds of emails, they are more likely to delete your email as superfluous to get to their internal biz emails.

We have not tried Tues, Wed, or Thurs yet as we have just started collecting data for our Friday emails.

BTW, we are not spammers as we provide a no-advertising blog on Workers Compensation that we email out as a newsletter.  Constant Contact is our favorite email administration service.

Email Campaign Timing

Yes I highly agree when using an email campaign you must know what is projected in 4-6 months.  Just like a new movie coming out.  We at Replacement Windows Portland try to mimic the same procedure for our product.

I'm still a firm believer in freebies.  GIVE them a reason to act and then act again.  Whether it's in the title or the text.  -Tom
