Keep it in-house if you can
Hi Doug,
First off, thanks for the mention! :-)
Second, I wouldn't say that a business owner should consider a ghost writer before an actual employee. I think I need to clarify this - if you have someone in-house who is capable of maintaining the blog, this is by far your best option. If you don't, or if there is a lack of writing talent, then consider hiring someone for the time being.
There is most definitely a debate over this issue. The biggest reason not to hire a ghost blogger that has been cited is authenticity and trust, especially in the face of recent research that shows consumers don't trust corporate blogs. Many consultants take the approach of training their clients to maintain their own blogs, which is great and something I absolutely agree with.
I think it comes down to individual circumstances; however, business owners should think through their goals and strategy for blogging first.
Future Ghost Blogger here..
Thanks, Doug, for this information. I started writing articles to post on my safety and security web site forum and am planning to start my own blog to promote my products but found out that I enjoy writing so I'm considering being a freelance blogger in the near future. In fact, I'm planning to sell my web site and blog full time if possible.
