Small Business Owners Becoming Mouse Potatoes

Taking Measures to Secure Their Futures

Staples announced some findings from its third annual Small Business Survey. For one, 62% of small business owners surveyed admit that they are becoming "mouse potatoes," or in other words, constantly spending time at their computers.

Two thirds of them eat and work at the same time, with one in five replacing breakfast with "deskfast" to maximize time and productivity. Other results shared by Staples include:

- 69 percent of U.S. small-business owners and managers are constantly trying new things to stimulate their business

- 47 percent view themselves as ‘intrapreneurs’ (i.e. an entrepreneur who operates within the corporate structure pursuing innovative projects).

- 84 percent stating that they will be in business next year in their current form

- three-quarters still believe in the ‘American Dream.’

- 50 percent are reducing their own compensation

- 38 percent are lowering business travel

- 45 percent are advertising less with traditional media

- 48 percent are using more viral and word-of-mouth marketing tactics.

- Most said they would be willing to forgo vacations and date nights to ensure job stability.

"Small businesses are obviously working harder to get through these tough economic times,” said John Giusti, vice president of small business marketing.

The survey included over 300 participants.

deskfast

hey Chris,

Thanks to you (and Staples) for the interesting survey. I feel sorry for the 25% that say they don't believe in the American dream anymore..

But the thing I like more in this article is the word "deskfast". That cracks me up! Unfortunately, I have deskfast almost everyday, but I'm still laughing! I'll have to remember that one. Thanks, Steve, Pinnacle Trade Show Booths

This information is very true

hi, my name is atalay and im from sydney australia. We run a website called www.batteryshack.com.au and we are pretty much 85% running our business from the internet.  We started back in 2003 and have increased our business 20-25% annually. Not because we are introducing new things, because the internet usage is increasing  year by year.

Our staff Come into work and they eat in fron of the pc

They drink in front of the pc and they stay entertained in front of the pc while they are doing there jobs within there company.

Our comany also advertises on google and other major sites like ebay and oztion to increase the awareness on the internet.

We are growing year by year and to be honest our staff do no mind sitting in front of the pc and doing pretty much what they want as long as our  companies policies are met and we are flexible after this and these things have been completed day to day.

As long as our customers are our number 1 priority we will be in business.
