NSBA Asks Congress To Remember Small Businesses

Outlines specific recommendations, too

Well, we're officially a ways into the new year, and the National Small Business Association is trying to make sure that it is indeed a happy one.  This group has asked lawmakers to keep small businesses in mind if they try to address the recession by passing any more economic stimulus bills.

NSBA Chair Keith Ashmus said in a statement, "As each member of Congress participates in a swearing-in process today, I implore them NOT to forget about the folks back home, the small-business owners who are counting on them.  We deserve better than another taxpayer-funded bail-out that does nothing for the true creators of American job growth."

Specifically, the NSBA is looking for fewer SBA lending fees, more lending overall, and the end of self-employment tax on health insurance.  Also, it would have at least 23 percent of stimulus funds go to small business contracts and get the Small Business Innovation Research program reauthorized, among other things.

So there's some help that may be on the way.  A sort of prerequisite is for Congress to straighten out who is and isn't a member, of course, and the difficulties there are disheartening.

Along those lines, we should also, for the sake of completeness, mention one more fact that the NSBA shared: "according to a recent NSBA survey which will be released next week . . . [t]he number of small-business owners who believe the national economy is much worse off when compared with five years ago skyrocketed to 64 percent, up from 32 percent in August."

Duhhh...

Unless you're a small business owner with your head in the sand, the answer to that NSBA question about the economy now vs five years ago is a no brainer! I'm a small business owner with a safety and security web site and it's been hard for me so I can only imagine what the brick and mortor businesses are suffering through right now. Thanks, Doug, for this great article.

No Job no money to spend

I think the administration is out in left field. Giving $500 to $1,000 is too short term. Most will pay bills or buy groceries with the money. We had to lay off several people already because business is down and taxes are up. My accounting tells me that if were were to get a 10% income tax cut we could hire back 3 people. Hmm, 3 families with income or 3 families with $1,000. I don't get it. Looks to me millions of people were sold a bill of goods. Good Luck everyone.

NSBA must combat new power manufacturers have to enforce MSRP

In my opinion one of the top priorities for the NSBA is thwarting the new powers given to manufacturers to enforce pricing policies. The Supreme Court recently ruled in their favor and it spells real trouble for small online businesses who rely on their ability to offer more competitive prices than big box stores and other giant merchants, due to small online business' ability to keep overhead cost very low. This translates into aiding customers during these tough economic times as well. Not to mention the detrimental effect it has on the American free enterprise spirit. The public needs to be told about this great price fleecing, which is beingdriven behind the scenes by big box stores in collusion with manufacturers. It's time for small businesses to fight back, as no one was around to help small mom and pop shops when big box stores invaded every town in America. But now with the internet small businesses can have their revenge and also do American consumers a favor at the same time, but only if they have the freedom to set their own pricing...
