Entrepreneurs Still Likely to Start Businesses in 2009

Despite Economic Gloom

The Entrepreneurs' Organization released some findings from its 2nd annual Global Economic Survey today. Highlights include:

- Nearly nine out of ten global entrepreneurs are concerned about the current economic climate

- More than half of all entrepreneurs are very concerned or concerned about obtaining funding

- Seventy percent of U.S.-based entrepreneurs are concerned or very concerned about the rising cost of providing healthcare in 2009

- Seventy percent of surveyed entrepreneurs are highly confident or confident about surviving the economic crisis

- More than 80 percent of those surveyed believe that entrepreneurs will play a significant role in economic recovery

- One in five entrepreneurs is more likely to start a business now than they were last year, and more than half are equally as likely

- Almost half of respondents anticipate an increase in revenues in 2009, and a quarter expect revenue levels to remain the same as 2008

- Globally, more than a third of entrepreneurs surveyed will increase “green” initiatives, while 45 percent will maintain their current commitment level

- Nearly 60 percent of entrepreneurs surveyed will maintain their current commitment level and nearly a quarter will increase the priority of corporate social responsibility

- Forty four percent of global respondents anticipated that the Obama administration would have a positive effect on their businesses

- U.S.-based entrepreneurs are split regarding the new administration’s impact on their business: 39 percent expect a positive impact and 40 percent expect a negative impact

“Our annual survey reveals the business perspective of some of the world’s most successful small business owners, and the outlook for this year rings with a tone of optimism in the face of economic hardship,” says Dave Galbenski, Chairman of the Global Board of Directors for the Entrepreneurs’ Organization. “Not only does this data help us provide maximum value to our members by allowing us to better customize our programs and resources to their needs, it serves as an outstanding global barometer for entrepreneurial concerns and priorities in the coming year.”

I think the thing that stands out most to me is that over half of entrepreneurs are equally as likely to start a business this year as were last year. Considering all the doom and gloom fallout from the economic downturn, this seems pretty decent. It's amazing how much confidence we still see in these times, but isn't that what makes entrepreneurs successful in the long run anyway? Even the employees are showing a good amount of confidence.

Internet Developers: We ARE the Economy

Despite the world economy going down the drain, the internet allows just about anyone with desire and a solid plan can make money. A well writen and informative article.

The Mind can be Very Conviencing.

It is everywhere- the tv, newpapers, magazines, the buzz around town the high gas prices, job loss and the list just goes on and on and on.  Yes, I started a business despite fianancial adversity and know in my mind and soul that the right tools to beat the 'hard times' is through personal development.  This is crucial to achieving your personal and financial goals of being your own boss.  Our mind is a very complex information holding center where if we are in an ongoing mindset in which personal development is non existent or even unheard of, then life will pretty much stand still.

Having a long history serving in the medical field, I can honestly say that mind is over matter.  Environmental stressors preventable diseases such as obesity can raise health care costs because you have someone that more then likely is not either visiting their provider every year or complying to a low carb/fat diet and exercise which then leads to diet controlled diabetes (Type 2) and the list just goes on.  If the business owners took into account how vital it is to receive preventative instead of restorative care then the price of healthcare would stop going up.

For every decision there is a good or a bad outcome in having your own business, and that is for each and every person to analyze but just keep it to a minimal.  Worrying about is only makes it worse.

Hang in There, it's a New Year...change your live before it changings you!

This is a very informative article Chris. Thank you for posting this. People would appreciate knowing that despite of the economic crisis, entrepreneurs can hang on and start running their businesses. Good to know that people are still optimistic about their outlook and have the confidence needed to survive.

There has never been any

There has never been any doubt that we were going to go forward. A lot of investors are sitting on their hands.

Whatever business you start

Whatever business you start have goals, and outlines to them, financing, and exit strategy and experience. Know your product and your competition. Work hard every day and you wil not fail as long as you are flexible. My father used to say “it is the reed that weathers the storm not the mighty oak”.

When you decide on all of that make sure that you try to have as many ways to make money out of your efforts without diluting your message.
