Show Them How to Save Money in Your Ads

They're Probably Looking for Ways To Do So

Now is a good time to let customers know in your advertising, how they are going to save money by using your product or service. This is sound advice anytime really, but in these economic times (I'm tired of writing those words, but I might be writing them for a while) potential customers are far more concerned with how you will help them do just that.

A recent article at MarketingShift makes reference to a number of current TV ads that make reference to people being broke. Matt O'Hern writes:

McDonalds
dollar-menu success must have inspired its competitors to follow suit. Last night, I was watching the Duke vs. Davidson game on ESPN, when I saw the new cheesy double beef burrito commercial from Taco Bell. In the ad, a nerdy-looking customer retracts his change from the Starbucks tip jar to spend it on Taco Bell's 89-cent burrito instead.

I also watched a Popeyes  ad with another humorous portrayal of our dire straits. The scene shows a man digging around for quarters in washing machine at the laundromat. He emerges with gloating smile and handful of six quarters- just enough to buy the new Bayou Buffalo Chicken Wrap...

These are probably pretty successful ads. People love cheap food. Especially when they don't have money.

Of course not everyone can offer their products at such attractive prices and expect to stay in business, but that doesn't mean you can't play up the "you're broke, and we can save you money this way..." angle.

For example, a mechanic might suggest that a tune up and an oil change will save you money by keeping your car from having problems further down the road. An insurance company might note that the price of a premium is less than the cost of potential damages.

The point is, people need ways to spend less money. If you can find a way to convince them that you can help them with that, you're going to look better than your competitors who aren't showing them.

Great marketing tip

You are absolutely right...consumers are trying to find ways to save money, and anything you can offer them to fill that need will help close the deal.   Very similar to the "no trans fat" labels on food.  Seems like a healthy choice, even when it's not :)

You do run the risk, of course, of  "message fatigue".  Don't oversell the pitch :)

I'll have to put my thinking cap on...

Thanks, Chris, for this information. I have to agree but not all of us can offer products for change. My safety and security products are the best and I've got their prices as low as possible so I'll have to put my thinking cap on and see if I can find an effective angle that can capture the attention of potential customers.

great tips, but I am not

great tips, but I am not sure how to market this way, i am going to have to plan out my next campaign with this in mind.
