Preparing For Worse Things Than Mean Loan Officers

Microsoft gives disaster, theft advice

Here's a question for you: supposing you knew something like a flood or tornado was on the way, what few business-related things would you try hardest to save?  Now, consider whether you're doing enough to protect them since not every sort of disaster is so predictable.

A post on the Small Business Blog from Microsoft notes, "According to a November SME news feed article, as many as 90 per cent of firms which lose data following a disaster such as flood damage, power outage or technical failure are forced to cease trading within two years."

Then, "Some 20 per cent of businesses will be affected by such incidents during their lifespan, the figures indicate.  Of those which have not made business continuity provisions, 43 per cent will never reopen and 80 per cent will close within 13 months, it is claimed."

It was an attempted break-in that reminded the Microsoft blogger of all these possible problems (and should remind you of one more threat).  Here's hoping you never encounter any of them, but that you've at least got some precautions in place should they strike.

One other thought: even if you're perfectly content to take chances, it might be worth asking your insurance company whether added security would lower your rates.
