SBMU: Digging Deeper into Analytics

A lot of useful data is there just waiting to be used.

A lot of people use some type of analytics program, but there are several things that you need to remember when using one. Craig Sutton of BrightWeb Marketing attended SBMU Columbus and was shocked at how much he could learn from analytics. Matt Bailey of SiteLogic Marketing told him how he could better target his customers just by using analytics to its full extent. We're going to look closely at a few of Matt's ideas.

First of all, there is no such thing as accuracy when it comes to analytics. You can make a logical assessment from trends and patterns, but you have to be careful to look at the data over a period of time.

So many people get caught up in the numbers that they forget their goal behind looking at analytics in the first place - improving their website. Matt lays out a helpful pyramid to use when working with analytics. The bottom of your pyramid is the data and acts as your foundation. The second or middle level is information. The top level of your pyramid is the knowledge you gain from your data and information from the other levels.

Matt also gives 3 C's of analytics that helps to further break your information down. They are: context, comparison, and contrast. The context is what people are looking for and who the people are. Comparison and contrast go together. Look for both differences and similarities in your information and don't worry about what the competitors are doing or what the overall industry is doing. Your data and information is what truly matters.

Remember that analytics programs are there to assist you and you will have to dig deep to take full advantage of its benefits.

Digging Deeper In Analytics

I could not agree more. Analytics and understanding how to use the data is essential to increased conversions and business growth. Most people just look at the bounce rate for individual pages and try to go and plug the holes, so to speak. You need to do that too, but you must dig deeper. Many people do not even have their sales funnel set up.

I have just started using

I have just started using analytics, I had another progam I was using, analytics is much more thorough, I still need to understand it better. e are a store that features tropical decor and this is a vital tool for us. I have a bounce rate of 50% I do not know if that is ok or not, we have a lot of products.

traffic sources

I have been using google analytics for a while now and I have achieved tremendous success with the traffic sources feature. With this feature, I can see where most of my traffic is coming from and concentrate my marketing on that channel. I can also see what keywords users are searching for most to get to my website and I increase the density of those keywords in my site.
