12 Steps to Using Google's Local Business Center

Your Business Listing on Google Maps

About a month ago, I talked about the importance of you business being found in Google Maps, and how they added some new features for AdWords local business ads for Google Maps. Recognizing that many businesses are not utilizing Google's Local Business Center to its potential, Google has shared a video to help educate those who are simply not familiar with it.

With the Local Business Center you can add the following information pertaining to you business to Google Maps:

- Name
- Address
- Phone Number
- Descriptions
- Photos and more.

Here are the steps for getting set up:

1. Go to Google Maps

2. Click "put you business on Google Maps"

3. Sign in or Create an Account

4. Click "Add New Business"

5. Enter your business information

6. Click "Next"

7. If it shows your business is already on there, click "claim listing"

8. If it's not there, click "add listing"

9. Then you can enter additional details such as business category, opening hours, photos, payment options, etc.

10. Click submit

11. At this point, you will need to verify you business by phone or postcard. After you are verified, your info will appear on Google Maps.

12. Later on, you can go back to Local Business Center to edit your information, see how many people went to your listing, or create coupons.

That's about all there is to it. Not a whole lot of work for potentially a whole lot of exposure and added convenience for customers looking for what you offer. It probably won't hurt to take a few minutes and do this.

Getting to the exposure part

Nice post Chris, but I think just like the video Google did it misses a big point, which is optimizing your listing to appear higher up.  Of course you have to be on the map before you can gain position, but the video didn't even take into account if their fake store is on the map for the right thing.

How you fill out the listing matters.  What I see all the time is people choosing categories where Google doesn't even show their local 10 pack at the top of the page for that search phrase plus their local modifier.  To me this is just one of the factors that equals a big missed opportunity for small businesses when it comes to Google maps and local listings.

Google listings for local search directory

Do you know where I could find a list of the categories that Google uses? Do you have any other info about these listings and the ways that you "get to the top"? I have seen some businesses get to the top of the listing without a web site. How did they do that?

Any info you can give me would be helpful and appreciated.

How about GPS? Is info found in a GPS taken from Google Maps? We get a few visitors who say they found us via their GPS unit. Please advise if this is at all related to Google Maps. Thx!!! Missy.

Google Local

Chris,

in markets with a strong local geography Google local can deliver 20 to 30% of the search traffic. The algorithm appears to deliver entirely different search results from "web" results. Its well worth going through the above steps.
