Microsoft Launches Virus And Security Solution Center

Directs small businesses to other resources, too

Small business owners obviously have a lot of things demanding their immediate attention: think attracting tightfisted consumers and dealing with tax season, for starters.
Now's a bad time to forget about computer security, though, and Microsoft is trying to help on that front.

Since the recession has put a fair number of people out of work, it's reasonable to believe spammers' ranks have swelled.  The recession may also have made the average person a more susceptible target, given that desperation could drive them to consider embracing too-good-to-be-true opportunities.

So a post on the Small Business Blog from Microsoft stated, "Microsoft has put together an advisory support site for anyone who's at all concerned about viruses, spam, Trojans, malware - whatever their type. . . .  [B]oth consumers and businesses can get free advice and support, including how to recognise phishing and scamming here."

It seems that February is also "Scams Awareness Month," so a link to Consumer Direct (which explains many schemes) was given next, and then there's a link to Get Safe Online (The Blog) for good measure.

It's painful to imagine a business making it this far into the recession only to be injured or felled by a virus or scam.  Reducing the risk might be worth a little light reading.

The two free tools signify more of Microsoft's baby steps into the security software market. Microsoft publicly stated its intent to enter the antivirus market when it acquired antivirus technology from GeCAD Software in 2003, but the Redmond, Wash., software giant has yet to ship a product or a service.
