SBA Expresses Approval Of Stimulus Bill

Provides breakdown of where $730 million's headed

Remember how, while the bailout bill was under discussion, Minority Leader John Boehner help up thousands of sheets of paper and said absolutely no one had read the whole document?  Well, employees of the Small Business Administration have at least done a little skimming now, and they've found some things that may be of interest to small business owners.

All in all, the SBA will get $730 million thanks to the bill.  Of that, $375 million will go towards "temporary fee reductions or eliminations on SBA loans and increased SBA guaranteed shares," according to a release.  About $255 million will then fund a loan program geared towards resolving existing debt payments.

The SBA's Microloan program is in line to receive $30 million, $20 million should modernize its technology systems, and $15 million will help expand the Surety Bond Guarantee program.  The last $35 million is for staffing and the Office of the Inspector General.

Maybe it would have been nice to see some bigger numbers and a greater number of small business issues taken into consideration.  But Darryl K. Hairston, the SBA's acting administrator, said, "We are going to be part of the solution, and this bill gives us specific tools to make it easier and less expensive for small businesses to get loans, give lenders new incentives to make more loans, and help restore healthy SBA secondary markets to boost liquidity."

Plus, you never know - if the economy continues to sink (the Dow's down 110 points right now), more bailout bills could appear.

Stimulous for Small Business

Yes, it would have been nice if the president added some actual fudning that went to small businesses directly. Should this first round of stimulous not get the economy back on track, I suspect that the next round will include more funding to SBA's Microloan section to be fulfilling.

Given the way that the SBA

Given the way that the SBA works (or rather doesn't work), it seems to me that giving them 730 million dollars is a perfect and total waste of taxpayer funds.

The SBA was never intended to be anything but an appeasement to the masses and in fact is just another way swilling the Washington hog trough.

As with most government organizations the masses are far better off maintaining  a low profile and finding their own solutions rather than becoming an object of government interest.

I have never in all of my years in business ever found anyone who was aided by the SBA that could not have found capital easier on their own.

It does however give every meddling government agency a detailed look at your business affairs and insures that no tax is overlooked and that all agencies can more efficiently bury you in red tape.

Here... Here...

Can but only agree with the previous commentator. Given that the debt-o-meter for the US recently had to have an extra digit added to it, borrowing and spending yet more money and getting further into debt only defers a bigger crisis until later on down the line.

When the Small Business Act

When the Small Business Act was enacted in 1958, it had a very simple mission. Find a way to get loans diectly to businesses that couldn't get them through traditional channels.

Provides money for the SBA's

Provides money for the SBA's Inspector General Office to oversee bill programs. Requires regular reports from the SBA on progress made. Has ambitious deadlines for the agency to create and issue regulations that will govern the new programs.

SBA need funding more then

SBA need funding more then ever.
