Search as a Local Marketing Tool

Important Things to Consider

Clearly many people overlook the opportunities they have online to promote their businesses on a local level. Sure economic times have produced some trouble waters for local advertising, but that doesn't mean the need is not there. Search guru Danny Sullivan once drove home that need quite well in an article, which I referenced at SmallBusinessNewz.

SEO for Local Search

"Most web professionals are quite familiar with global search. Search marketing for global search can be boiled down to a two part formula: anchor text + authority," says Ryan Caldwell at Search Engine Journal. "Local search is different."

You might recall a recent article I ran referencing Caldwell's ideas on linkbait. It's clear that this guy knows what he's talking about. When it comes to optimizing for local search, he cites the following three things as keys to success:

1. Anchor Text + Authority Matters, But Less
2. Local Groupings
3. Address Citations

Of course Caldwell elaborates on each of these in his article. You can learn some very useful things from it.

Using Google for Local Marketing

You should always keep in mind that there are search engines (including maps) being used besides Google. That doesn't change the fact that Google dominates the search market share by an incredible margin, so if you want the most exposure, it's still going to be the most important one to focus on.

Google has a number of tools available to help you market your business at the local level. You've got the Local Business Center. I recently highlighted 12 steps for using that (via Google itself).

Google recently introduced some improvements to its AdWords local business ads for Google Maps. They also posted guidelines for quality listings, making it easier for businesses to get listed.

Google Maps Links

On the video level, you can advertise on television through Google TV Ads, an extension of AdWords. You can also geotag YouTube videos and optimize them for location. Let's not overlook the fact that YouTube videos are often included in Google as universal search results either.

It's in the Geography

Allow me to point you to another article on local search marketing, this one coming from Jeremy Rivera at Huomah.com. He's got a lot of useful things to say also, but the most important is probably his stressing of geotargeting.

"The bottom line is, if you are a local business, it doesn't make sense to go after broad keywords," he says. "Geotarget. Do everything you can to get listed in these results."

It is true that the web opens your business up to a global audience in many cases. Local audiences are often the most important though, and for those seeking out customers from their own area, you have to think local in every facet of your search marketing efforts.

In regards to map results..

I actually had a client contact us to help them place there business in all the major cities in their area. Problem is they wanted to do it in the Google Maps where you can add your listing.

They advised that many of the ones showing were not actually in that area and those companies were choosing random locations that were actually fields, grocery stores, gas stations etc.. just so they could get the phone number, website url and details promoted. I checked into it and one company had 30 map locations and was actually working out of their home!

Wow, that would be a horrible 1st impression on a local basis. I guess this would be called.. SPAM-MAPS .. funny, it's spelled backwords :)

We refused to participate and they actually cancelled their account because we would not help them shoot themselves in the foot. BYE!

We take a great deal of pride in our works, projects and have no desire to tarnish our rep!

Great post by the way but when I read the map part it reminded me of this conversation I had so I figured I'd share this with ya.

RE: In regards to map results...

That's very interesting. I wonder how much this is being done.

Local Search

Great article on local search marketing.  I am still following all your links. :-)

Very true...

This is very true for brick and mortar business. If my safety and security business were such, I would definitely take advantage of these advertising platforms but since it's an online store only, I need to go in another direction. Thanks, Chris, for this great information.

Dominating Local Search So Much More Than Maps

Google Maps or any search engine map is just scratching the surface of search marketing for local businesses.  The strategy that small businesses need to employ is one of dominating the search results for their location.  This doesn't just mean in the maps it means all the way down the Organic listings for your search term phrase paired with your city and/or state.

I've got a healthy list of the free services that show up well in natural search for local small businesses.  Anyone reading this is welcome to email me david at dewpointproductions.com and I'll be happy to send it to you.

Very Helpful. Thanks.

For years I created and marketed niche products on the world wide web. The audience was global. And ranking high through organic search was relatively easy and straight forward.  Just recently I began working for a brick and mortar in the outrageously competitive automotive dealer market. Local search has taken on a whole new meaning. This article is very helpful and much appreciated. The links were also very helpful.

Interesting and Informative Material.

Great article! I was especially interested in your comments about "Most web professionals are quite familiar with global search. Search marketing for global search can be boiled down to a two part formula: anchor text + authority," this makes a lot of sense and I will keep it in mind for future referrence. Thanks again.

RE: Interesting and Informative Material.

That particular quote was from Ryan Caldwell, but thank you.

Nice topic.

You've put a new light on the subject and much food for thought about using search as a local marketing tool.  Thank you. Danielle
