Great Ad Campaigns Can Fail Without a Good Landing Page

You've Got Them. Don't Send Them Away.

As an advertiser it is extremely critical to acknowledge the importance of your landing pages. If you don't put enough thought into them, you're going to end up with a higher bounce rate.

"In general, website visitors only spend a few seconds scanning the page they reach after they've clicked on an ad," says Edward Jackson of the Google Website Optimizer Team. "If the product or service they're looking for isn't immediately visible, they will leave."

Remember, you have more than just one homepage. Your landing pages for ad campaigns are included in that. Realistically, you should be constantly making improvements to your pages which bring people to your site from searches only to have them quickly leave.

But when you're paying good money to advertise, you really need to make it count. It is a very common problem for advertisers to overlook this aspect of the campaign. It's easy to assume that people will seek out the product on your site once they get there, but if you just make your landing page your (real) homepage, you might be surprised at how little they try to pursue your offer.

You can have the cleverest, and "clickiest" campaign on the web, but if customers can't find what they clicked for easily, you're bound to have wasted that clever and clicky campaign. Not to mention the would've-been-customer's time, which won't bode well for your brand in their mind further down the road either.

Very true...

Great post and I totally agree with you! As an advertiser this is very important. I've have clicked through ads that have taken me to pages where there is too much information about unrelated products mixed in with the actual product that inspired the click-through... this almost always results with me clicking back on my browser and not wasting my time further.

You must give them exactly

You must give them exactly what they are searching for.

Importance of Good Landing Page

You are so right. There is nothing so frustrating as clicking on a link and landing on some ad page or a page where you have to search through to find the information on yet another page. I have never been sure how people expect to succeed by misdirecting potential customers to the ad page first. I just click away and they just lost a potential customer.

Landing Pages

It's also very important to not only create specific landing pages geared towards your ad copy, but to optimize and test the efficiency of your landing pages. Using Google's free Website Optimizer, you do both multi-varient testing and a/b testing to improve the conversion rates of your landing pages. Sometimes, what looks good to you, might not be what will work for your target audience. There is no way to know for sure without testing. Use these tools to your advantage and maximize your ROI.
