Social networks/Blogs Overtake Email in Global Popularity

According to Research from Nielsen

It seems Internet users are more likely to send you a poke than an email these days as Nielsen reveals that social networking has overtaken email in popularity.

Nielsen’s latest survey, "Global Faces and Networked Places" (.pdf), found that over two-thirds (66.8%) of the global online population spend time at Member Communities, a category that lumps together social networks and blogs.

Now, for the first time ever on a global basis, email lags behind Member Communities, accounting for only 65% of the global online population. And although Member Communities remain the fourth most popular category behind search, portals and software manufacturer sites, they are growing at twice the rate.

According to Nielsen Online’s Chief Executive Officer, John Burbank, the adoption of Member Communities and the time spent on them show no sign of abatement. “Social networking will continue to alter not just the global online landscape, but the consumer experience at large,” he said in a recent announcement.

Other key findings from Nielsen’s research include:

- Member Communities account for one in every 11 minutes online globally.

- The biggest increase in visitors to Member Communities during 2008 came from the 35-49 year old age group.

- Social networking via mobile devices is becoming increasingly popular, especially in the U.K. where 23% of the population do so (2 million), compared with 19% in the U.S. (10.6 million). Both figures show a massive increase over last year – 249% in the U.K. and 156% in the U.S.

Yet, despite accounting for around 10% of all online time globally, Member Communities remain a largely un-monetized form of media. Nielsen’s report concludes that once this “magic formula” is found “the benefits could be truly incredible, having the potential to transform the potency of advertising across all forms of media to connect with target audiences and overcome the current distrust consumers have with advertising”.

hi

social networking, blog sites, twitter, facebook and the like are truly the trends nowadays. It's popularity is increasing tremendously. Yes, from surveys and based from data it may outrun or overtake emails but i think emails and research is still important in online communication.. Thanks for sharing this post.. Looking forward to reading other great  posts from you..

Time Online.

These stats are quite amazing,

Especially seeing we have the younger techno savvy generation coming through,

If social media is at present the 4Th most popular category behind search, portals and software manufacturer sites, but are growing at twice the rate does that mean that the days are numbered for the search engines.

With the introduction of twitter face-book friend-feed and so on and the older generation moving into retirement as small business owners we need to embrace these new medias and start using them to our advantage.

Teach our clients how to stay updated with twitter and the like, It could be a very profitable exercise for the entrepreneur who takes time to educate his client base on the use of these tools.

It's true...

I have found that email marketing for my safety and security web site is not effective at all where as social marketing does have a marked effect. Being able to actually interact with potential customers and build a relationship with them is very important to an online business.

I am pleading with you to

I am pleading with you to please post this article on your website to highlight the problems some of the women in the Grove Diamond community is facing with the cuban medical staff at the Diamond Diagnostic Center which is located on the East Bank Of Demerara in Guyana. Many patients seeking medical services at night have to wait long hours or are turned away because the cubans are out sporting with their Guyanese friends and men who takes them to clubs, restaurants and bars even when they are on call and the administrator indulges because he himself is a part of this clique. An investigation should be launched, unexpected visits should be made in the nights and on weekends.
