Social Media Marketing Takes Time

Report Looks at Social Media Marketing Practices

It’s great that so many marketers are embracing social media, but instant results aren’t on the cards and commitment is key. The length of time a business has been using social media, along with the number of hours given over to its implementation and management, could directly affect the end results, according to a new report from Whitepapersource.com’s founder, Michael Stelzner.

One of the aspects of social media marketing that Stelzner researched was the amount of time marketers committed to working with social media. What he found was that those just starting their foray into the medium committed less time than those who had been long-term users for a year or so.

For example, the data shows that newbies committed around 2 hours per week, those who had been involved with social media for a few months invested 10 hours a week and old-hands spent 20 or more hours per week.

"Social media marketing is an engagement with online communities to generate exposure, opportunity and sales," said Stelzner, "and the real shocker is that experienced folks are investing more than 20 hours each week with social media."

That data suggests either that after implementation, social media was found to be effective and worthy of more time allocation, or that those new entrants simply underestimated the man hours needed to maintain a successful social media presence when they first started out.

According to the comprehensive Social Media Marketing Industry Report , “A significant 64% of marketers are using social media for 5 hours or more each week and 39% for 10 or more hours weekly. It is interesting to note that 9.6% spend more than 20 hours each week with social media”. Couple that with the fact that almost three-quarters (72%) of Stelzner’s 900 respondents had only been using social media for a few months or less, and it does seem to fit that experience with the medium leads to greater time allocation.

Hopefully, those venturing into the world of tweets, blogging, social networking and podcasting, along with the multitude of other social media opportunities out there, will take away from this report the lesson that, while social media is seen as a cost-effective marketing tool, the real investment lies in the time committed to making it a success.

Stelzner’s free-to-download report is jam-packed with facts and figures relating to the current state of the social media industry and answers the top ten questions on every social media marketer’s, or wannabe’s, lips.

Commitment to social media

It is interesting that many small business owners feel they "should" get involved with social media and may go as far as signing up. I hear many then say "I don't know what to do now" and subsequently invest very little time. Others are frustrated when there are no tangible results in a week.

Social media is great but like all marketing tools requires that you understand your market, their challenges and have an understanding of how your business deals with those challenges. Also success relies on giving valuable content - that might be resources, tips etc. or else just giving expert insight into on-line conversations.

These things all take time and a commitment but are well worth it for the results they bring. There is a danger of treating social media as a "bright shiny thing" and taking great interest for a short time then losing interest and moving on before real results are forthcoming

No big effort

I use Facebook and Twitter. Thats it. Facebook actually generates a bit of traffic and widens the online precense. Not sure about Twitter yet.

Absolutely!

I couldn't agree more. I've been utilizing social media to market my safety and security web site as well as raise awareness for its products for over a year now and it really does take time and thought. Because it's so new, there isn't a lot out there to teach us the best way to approach it for our specific industry so we sort of have to use common sense and stumble on tips along the way. I'm still not sure I have it right but it's free and I like that I'm connecting personally with potential customers.

Keep Tweeting

I must say twitter and facebook is my top favourites in term of traffic :)

Can't Access Social Media

It's frustrating to try and do some social media marketing when those kind of sites are blocked by the local IT administrator.  I very often forget (or am too tired) to do that social media networking/marketing when I get to my home computer.  I guess our IT security team feels the cost of letting employees access these sites is too high in comparison to the benefit that it could bring to our bottom line.  Anybody else having this problem?

Let me explain the rationale

Let me explain the rationale .. it is more fully outlined in the white paper but we went through a lot of reflection and thinking about this too..for smaller agencies that have the social media consultant prepare the proposals I agree you don’t need to break out the Planning and Reviewing phases.

Social media marketing is

Social media marketing is the process of promoting your site or business through social media channels and it is a powerful strategy that will get you links, attention and massive amounts of traffic.

Social Media: The Waiting Game

Most of the marketing benefits of social media are still yet to be discovered. The one thing we do know, (as you mentioned) social media takes time. Both as an initial investment, and as part of realizing the benefits. Occasionally things turn viral and you can see a spike in the course of a day or two, but for most, the benefit won't be realized for a few months or seasons. At least that has been the experience my business has had with it so far.
