Bakery Hits Sweet Spot With Twitter Updates

Up-to-the-minute marketing

A certain chain of doughnut shops long ago figured out that lighting up a sign when the food is fresh increases sales.  Now, a bakery in the UK has taken a similar step using Twitter, and other small business might be able to adapt the idea, too.

Suppose you're given a choice between a pastry that's been sitting out all day and one that's still warm for the oven.  It's the second option that causes a little saliva to flow, right?

So as Robert Andrews reported, "a London bakery is using Twitter to message local followers the moment fresh eats come out of its oven.  Built by digital design agency Poke London, BakerTweet is a 'bakery-proof' internet-connected box comprising several circuit boards and an inventory of items, from cupcakes to scones.  Implemented at the Albion cafe across the road from Poke's Shoreditch headquarters, the box, when its button is pushed, blasts bun-fresh news to 145 of the area's creative geeks: 'Steamy, syrupy APPLE TURNOVERs are being freshly plucked from our oven right now.'"

This idea will probably work best where food is concerned, but small businesses can still use Twitter to announce flash sales and other sorts of things.

If you're not sure whether the idea is for you, consider testing how much attention Twitter announcements can get by telling your followers to mention a code for a small discount.

Brilliant

Man kudos to these guys for thinking up this way to market. I wonder if it could be commercialized and sold to other business niches somehow?

Either way if I was in their neighborhood I would want to get their fresh tweet! I can almost smell the goodies......

Great idea!

This is a great way to get the word out that fresh bake goods are ready to eat! I like the idea too about using the same concept for marketing other products. I'm typically on Twitter to raise awareness for my safety and security products but am concerned that too many tweets about my forum or discounts on products might cause some to unfollow me. I guess that's the risk one has to take to find their target audience. Thanks, Doug, for this delicious article!
