Advertising Through Feeds

Google Offers New Targeting Opportunities

If you publish content then there is a good chance you offer readers RSS feeds. You can monetize these by placing ads in them, and make up for the people that aren't visiting your site/blog because they're getting you content through their feed reader.

On the flipside, whether you are producing articles or not, there are no doubt feeds from other places that provide content related to whatever you business provides. This can be a good place for some ad impressions that you may have overlooked.

If you use Google for advertising, you may be interested in knowing that the company has expanded its interest-based ads for compatibility with feeds. Advertisers have always been able to target feeds using Placement Targeting and Contextual Targeting, but now they have this option too.

Interest-based Advertising was announced by Google in early March. It is basically serving ads based on he sites that users visit. With Interest Based Advertising, users can choose categories for ads they want to see. They can also tell Google the categories they don't want to see ads for. From the advertiser's perspective, this is a great targeting tool.

"By making it easier for advertisers to buy ads in your feeds, and by supporting the exact same features and ad formats that are accepted on websites, the competition for your ad space should increase to help ensure that you're maximizing your earnings potential," Google says.

Getting advertisers to perform well may be key for keeping them on as a client, so you're going to want to make sure the ads are being seen. That comes down to content for one obviously, but you have to stand out in the feed reader as well. A good title can go a long way on that end. I discussed this in the past here. It's just something to consider.
