Does the mention of 1040s and related forms cause you to shiver?  Well, if the National Association for the Self-Employed has its way, tax time won't be nearly as much of a headache next year.  A representative spoke to members of Congress this week about simplifying different aspects of the process.

Keith Hall, the NASE's National Tax Advisor, outlined four different ideas that would make the favorite season of accountants easier on regular people.  First, as noted in an official release, he'd like to see "the Internal Revenue Service's adoption of more simplified, 'plain English' forms and documentation."

Then, in a special nod to small business owners, Hall's hoping for "the establishment of a standard home office deduction," and next, the "clarification of the definition of an independent contractor."

Finally, Hall pushed for "allowing sole proprietors to deduct their health insurance premiums in the same manner as larger corporations."

The NASE believes the average self-employed taxpayer spends about 60 hours and $440 dealing with tax returns.  Regaining any portion of that lost time and money is an important goal, and it'd be even better if extra deductions came along as part of the package.
