A Few News Items of Which Small Businesses Should Take Note

Google Results, Twitter, and Local Listings with AOL

I've been writing for WebProNews like a madman today, and among the things I have covered, there are several things worth noting from a small business standpoint, so I wanted to share them here.

1. Google is rolling out richer snippets
in its search results. What this means is that you will have the ability to share more information from your site right in the Google search results.

Now, depending on what your goals for your site are, this could be a positive or a negative thing. Either way, it's worth looking into so that you can make a decision for yourself. Read up on it here.

2. Twitter has surpassed both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal in unique visitors. While that is perhaps a more interesting discovery for those following the news industry. The fact that so many people are using Twitter - more than both of these huge publications' sites should be an indication that your business should not be ignoring Twitter as a medium.

3. Finally, AOL released the AOL Search Toolbar today. It comes equipped with (among other things), a button for finding local business listings with AOL Yellow Pages. Now when most people think about search, they probably don't immediately think of AOL. But AOL still has a ton of users, and many of them will likely download this toolbar, putting AOL's yellow pages no more than a click away no matter where they are on the web. Consider that.

Please feel free to share your thoughts below on any of these items.

Thanks, Chris!

Google, Twitter and AOL...hmmmm. I've been using Twitter for some time now to socially market my safety and security web site so I've got that covered. I'll have to check on the Google thingie and I use AOL all the time so thanks, Chris for the info on the new toolbar!

It seems like Google has

It seems like Google has made a ton of changes lately (not surprising)! I hear that the way users can search on Google has changed too, but I don't see it yet when I go to Google. I'm still trying to really find how Twitter can help my wedding and bridal shower favors store. I guess it really comes down to marketing, but not the optimization piece. I'm still trying to mentally separate the two, although they can work together.
