It all starts with a plan. Some businesses are receiving very useful information from their social media campaigns, but other businesses are not. One reason for the lack of success could be that many businesses do not have a solid social media plan. Unfortunately, some businesses are jumping on the social media bandwagon simply because it is the latest fad.
As explained in the above video, a business needs to have a clear purpose for using social media and a plan for implementing it into their overall business strategy. Understand that a social media campaign consists of more than just existing on Facebook or MySpace.
First of all, a business should determine which social media sites would best benefit them. Find out if there is a conversation circulating about your brand and join it. If there is not, research the various social media sites in order to know which one would best benefit your business.
Remember that a social media campaign is part of the overall business marketing strategy, which is ongoing. It requires constant management. It is best to start out small with a social media campaign because it could be overwhelming to manage many different accounts.
Social media provides valuable opportunities for businesses. A business just needs to determine where the value lies for them. Has your business found that value? If so, what advice would you offer to newbies?

Unlocking the Power of Social Media
Re: Unlocking the Power of Social Media
It's true...
I basically use FaceBook and Twitter for socially marketing my safety and security web site. When I first started, I signed up for every social site that came along. I found that not all of these social sites were accomplishing my goal, therefore I ended up focusing on two. Thanks, Abby, for confirming my decision.
So Much Noise, So Little Music
Social networking, social networking ... everyone seems to shout about it, but nobody demonstrates a value in B2B business. It still sounds to me like a lot of running around for nothing. It is a medium for people with a lot of time on their hands. As we all have less and less time, I look for tasks/projects that will bring real results a whole lot sooner. I totally agree that real planning needs to go into this aspect of business promotion.
