Obama Takes Turn Honoring Small Businesses

Discusses more helpful measures on the way

Yesterday afternoon, Small Business Administration awards were given out, and President Obama was on hand to participate in the ceremony.  The president spoke highly of small businesses in general, and then went on to talk about his efforts to help them through the recession.

Barack Obama

Senators Landrieu and Snowe just covered some of the same ground, but given that Obama's remarks carry rather more weight, this development is interesting.  He started by complimenting Karen Mills, the SBA's new administrator, and then applauding businesses that have survived the economic downturn so far.

Obama next stated, "You're the job creators, responsible for half of all private sector jobs.  You're innovators, producing 13 times more patents per employee than large companies.  You're the starting point for the products and brands that have redefined the market."

Later, he got around to possible improvements.  According to a transcript, Obama said his proposed budget slashes the capital gains tax for investments in small or entirely new businesses to zero.  He also mentioned healthcare reform.  And finally, there's a new loan program called America's Recovery Capital that will go live on June 15th, providing up to $35,000 per business.

Not bad for spending nine minutes on stage.  Optimists might want to remember that National Small Business Week isn't over yet, either.

It's a start...

As a small business with a web site dedicated to safety and security products, all of the above is fine but doesn't necessarily impact me. For me a break on some of the fees I have to pay would be a great help; for example credit card processing fees. Thanks, Doug, for the report.

Small businesses can scarf

Small businesses can scarf up some of those really smart players. A lot of Fortune 500 employees are going to work for small businesses next. I’ve had several clients who’ve been fortunate enough to acquire some A-player talent.

Cottage Industry

Small business can be so broad a term.  Let's not forget about the cottage industry.  Working from home for the disabled and stay at home mom's means extra income that in turn get put back into the economy.  There is almost not small business benefits for them.
