Online Brand Fraud A Growing Concern

Research documents high costs

Small business owners may want to start keeping an especially sharp eye out for unauthorized appearances of their companies' names.  A new report indicates that online brand fraud is on the rise.

Specific problems that businesses may face include cybersquatting, illegal copying, and online scams that utilize trademarked or associated terms.  These aren't small problems, either.

Donovan Neale-May, the Chief Marketing Officer Council's executive director, noted according to a Marketing Charts article, "Marketers have awakened to not just the threat to bottom line business issues posed by trademark trespassing, but also the costs of lost brand value, integrity and consumer trust."

In fact, the CMO Council and MarkMonitor found that, "[a]mong those respondents who have estimated the financial toll on sales of brand intrusions, 39.6% say the cost is greater than 5% of sales, and 8.2% say it exceeds 20% of sales."

So if you're ready to take action, it might help to know that 42 percent of companies bundle their brand protection matters together with the legal, finance, or IT departments.  Also, setting up a simple system of Google alerts for terms tied to your small business will go a long way towards keeping effective tabs on everything.

Additional research from Aberdeen

Doug,

BrandProtect (one of my clients) sponsored additional Aberdeen research on this topic. The report is titled: Brand Reputation Management: Using Online Monitoring to Protect the Company's Crown Jewels. There are some decent stats in here about best practices.

Internet Mail Order Fraud

HI,
I am recently defrauded by one who calls himself Jianchun Ding alias Cynthia Cynthia.  He is running a website advertising electronics, Mobiles, Bikes etc. His website addres is : " elec-shop-china.com" and his e-mail address is " service@elec-shop-china.com". I remitted thhe sum of US$ 90 under his name and he never sent the item I ordered. When I sent an e-mail reminding him of his cyber criminal act, he switched on to an automatic replying system asking for verification.
The question is not me, I am aready a victim but what about orders whom he is going to extort millions of dollars. This guy has to be stopped and I am dedicated until they put him behind bars. So I am reporting this cyber crime to anti crime Internet Agencies worl wide .
Yours,
Ibrahim  S.  K.  Bangura.

Torrent sites

I honestly believe it would be hard to prevent people uploading and downloading films from torrent sites.

I sympathise with the movie owners though.

gotoozoo.com

Hi

Can anybody tell me if www.gotoozoo.com is a reliable source for buying brand electronics online? Some of their prices are so much lower than any other dealer's prices that it raises suspicion.

I'm looking forward to hearing some good advice.

You can stop all the

You can stop all the knock-offs from vying for competition in the market, but you can control and improve the image of what you are selling. Soon enough these inferior knock-offs will have to either come up with something better than yours, or find something else to sell.
