New Small Biz Employment Report Documents Layoffs

Bright spots exist, though

It's been a rough few months for the employees of small businesses, according to new data.  Layoffs seem to have taken place on a somewhat shocking scale, which of course doesn't signal encouraging things about small businesses themselves, either.

NFIBThe National Federation of Independent Business performed one of its regular surveys, and a statement released afterward reports, "Seasonally adjusted, there was a decline in average employment per firm of 1.26 workers reported during the last three months among small business owners in May, the largest decline in jobs in survey history for a three month period."

On the whole, then, "Three percent of the owners increased employment by an average of 2.5 workers per firm, but 27 percent reduced employment an average of 5.7 workers per firm (seasonally adjusted)."

Yet on the bright side, job creation plans are positive, so small business owners seem to anticipate a time at which they'll have more money to spare for payroll.

Plus, there's one other way in which this development might be less than awful: the fact that small businesses have been laying off employees at least implies that they haven't all been cut down to one-man operations.

Increased Work Loads

Since January 09 our website has brought in more sales of website templates on record levels. Many of which have been in business for a long period of time.

A couple of weeks ago one of the larger companies in the local area contacted us saying that they actually laid off two people so they can create a website to help make sales. That's really tough thing to hear. It's good that we've got another sale but horrible that they laid off two people to make the purchase they thought was in the 10,000's with bids from all over the US.

Once we got the scope of the project it was a few detailed modifications to one of the oscommerce solutions and the whole thing was quoted less than $3,000 as they indeed have 1,000's of products.

Happy ending? Yes, they hired one employee back for us to teach them the management, setup and maintain the website. At much lower rate I'm sure but it's good to know that we saved a job for someone :)

Thanks,
Snerdey
