Google Analytics Nods To Bing

Get the latest traffic stats (or wait a bit for a simpler solution)

Reviews of Microsoft's new search engine, Bing, have been a bit mixed so far.  Although people seem to like it, the "But It's Not Google" acronym has stuck.  Still, if you want to take traffic from Bing into account - and there's no reason not to - you should know that Google Analytics has set something up.

Google LogoSebastian Tonkin, a member of the Google Analytics team, explained on the Google Analytics Blog, "[Y]ou can add the following line to your Google Analytics tracking code as a temporary solution."

pageTracker._addOrganic("bing", "q");

Thanks to this line, you might be able to make some timely decisions about whether advertising with Bing is a good idea.  Either beat your competitors to the punch or save yourself from wasting a boatload of money, depending on what you find.

Just be careful if you decide to tinker with the Google Analytics code.  Tonkin called this a move "for advanced users only," and a more elegant, official update that'll add Bing to a list of default search engines is supposed to be on the way.

Whichever approach you choose, it should at least be nice to know that Google Analytics isn't going to turn a blind eye to its newest competitor.

Bing

Bing might steal some market from google at this initial stage. But in the long term it will lose all, and even more if MS does not add something really innovative.

Bing Is Petty Cool

I am pretty impressed with Bing. Very nice visual effects, beautiful pictures change daily on the home page and when you scroll over video, it plays a piece of the video..

Bing's Picture Search Is Good But...

One of the features I like about Bing is when you're searching pictures it doesn't do just the 1-20 like Google does but gives you as many results as possible.  This is a great feature BUT what I've noticed is the results aren't nearly as good as Googles.  For example, when I image search my name on Google, all results have something to do with me on Google but when I do the same on Bing hardly any of them have anything to do with me or the first and last name of the search.  It just goes to show you that the feature might be great but the validity of the content is still king.

A Thorn by any other name..

I don't see anything new about Bing. It just seems to be MSN/Live by another name.  If they want to gain market share, give us a new reason to use it. Changing their name will only get them good press for a couple months, not market share.

Glowtouch Technologies

I have tried the bing.com and it is really good in appearance. I feel that bing is more faster than google comparatively. Could anyone give some information on google analytics over Bing.com?

Thanks

Its results that count

I agree that Bing brings a fresh look to the search market. However, at the end of the day it is the quality of its search results that will determine if people will choose it in the long term. Some early results were quite ropey, but I am glad to say that the quality of the SERPs are improving IMO.
