Many people get a break when they finish with college or high school in the sense that they're forever done writing long, senseless papers.  Not small business owners.  New research drives home just how much time and money UK small business owners lose due to paperwork and red tape.

According to the Forum of Private Business, "Micro businesses (0 to 9 employees) spend an average of 33 hours per month complying with regulations, small businesses (10 to 49 employees) 48 hours per month and medium-sized companies (50 to 249 employers) 131 hours - equivalent to one full-time member of staff."

Which seems a little bit ridiculous, not to mention expensive.  Especially at a time when small businesses are closer than ever to the financial edge due to the recession.

So Matt Goodman, the FPB's Policy Representative, intends to push for a different way of doing things at a meeting of the Better Regulation Executive.  He said in a statement, "As part of a new department with a broader remit, the BRE must continue to put the smallest businesses at the forefront of its plans to change the culture of bureaucracy in the UK."

Let's hope Goodman's successful.  Even if a small business happened to have plenty of employees and tons of money, doing over 30 hours of administrative work hardly sounds fun.
