Get Your Customers to "Buy Now."

Show them with a simple button.

We talked recently about getting your products in Google shopping searches. You don't have to be a Google Checkout user for this, but if you are a Google Checkout user, Google is now providing a "Buy Now" button that could prove to be a much needed call-to-action for users.

In fact, the button may even give businesses a good reason to start using. I've always felt that offering the widest range of payment options was in a company's best interest anyway. This way, you're not alienating anybody. With a Google Checkout "buy now" button, it'll add a familiar and well-branded icon that users will see and know when they can purchase an item conveniently.

"After you place the Buy Now buttons on your website, buyers will be able to quickly and easily complete their purchases using Google Checkout," says Lisa August-Schmidt, Google Checkout Operations. "Once a buyer's card has been successfully authorized, they'll receive instructions on how to access their items using the URL and Key you specified."

To add one of Google's Buy Now buttons to your site:

1. Sign in to Google Checkout.

2. Click the Tools tab.

3. Click Buy Now buttons.

4. Follow the instructions in our button creation wizard in your account.

5. Click Create button code.

6. Click any part of the code snippet to highlight the entire code snippet.

7. Click Copy to clipboard.

8. Paste the code snippet in your website HTML near each item on your site you'd like to sell using Google Checkout.

I could see a button like this putting a dent into a site's shopping cart abandonment. As Doug noted recently, many small businesses are really close to making a lot more money, but consumers are abandoning shopping carts at the last moment for whatever reason. With "buy now," customers will presumably click it when they're ready for the purchase.

Just because we're talking about Google here, doesn't mean that the concept has to be limited to Google Checkout customers. The branding that it brings to the table may be valuable, and like I said, the addition of another payment option is always appreciated by someone, but the concept of the "buy now" call to action is the more significant thing I think.

It's just a simple way to grab the customer's attention, and show them directly where to go to purchase your product. If they have to hunt around too much, they're likely to just go somewhere else. It's a usability thing.

Getting your Customers to buy Now!

This idea seems quite a good idea.

But as you mention many people are not going to want to abandon their shopping carts.

Many of the shopping carts out there are not just a method of buying a product they also provide valuable information that is useful to the wesbite owner.

Also there are extras for the customer where they are able to track their purchases etc.

So even though Google provides an extra option i cannot see it beating the shopping cart.

Yes, but...

I used Google Checkout for a while to process credit cards for my safety and security web site. The "buy it now" feature wasn't available then. I liked using Google Check out because I only paid a small percentag fee for each transaction so there were no other monthy fees to be concerned with. However, I received an email from them after about six months with them stating that some of my products were in violation of their terms. Apparently non-lethal weapons such as stun guns and pepper spray are not allowed to be processed through Google Checkout. They even wanted me to stop selling hidden cameras in order to continue to use their service. Needless to say, I had to drop their service and pick up another processor. My reason for sharing, is to let other business owners know that they should read the terms and conditions very closely before setting up a account with Google Checkout to get the "buy it now" button. Thanks, Chris.

Google Buy It Now Restrictions

Wow, glad you shared that...it is apropos of nothing to me, but, I can see the social engineering in it...geeze. It was enough to make me not sign up for it after all just for principle.

Yes, but...but...

We also own a Safety and Security website and have wanted to use Google Checkout so badly! We see many other sites using Google Checkout that sell the types of items that we sell, IE: Pepper Spray, Stun Guns, Etc. I guess it is a matter of time and google will catch them eventually and make them stop. However, it is totally wrong that they will not allow us to sell these Non-Lethal weapons that save lives! Crime has increased due to the problems with the economy and these products have actually saved lives. You cannot imagine the women customers that have told us that they were able to protect themself from their abuser! And, I do not understand why they allow us to advertise with google adwords - spending tons of money, but NOT allow us to use google checkout? Does NOT make sense, does it??

Thank you for allowing me to rant and rave. My purpose for this comment is to hope that the google folks see this comment and the other security companies comment and have a change of heart.

Perhaps a Better Option ?

I know of two services that provide a far better option than Google Checkout. These are www.ArdeunVerified.com and www.AppActivator.com

The first provides for secure shopping, knowing your buyer and eliminating credit card fraud because the real owner of the credit card must first "authorize" the payment. Once the buyer is verified, the shopping site can decide to process the payment directly, or via the ArdeunVerified payment gateway. They also have a Buyer Club that encourages people to pay from an ArdeunVerified Stored Value account which means the shopping site receives "cleared" funds "immediately".

The second provides a shopping cart functionality, but can also be integrated into your current cart. They offer a payment gateway and you do not need a merchant number / account to use it, at only 3.5%

Personally I use ArdeunVerified because I know the buyer has been verified first.
