It's important to note that more and more people are going online rather than printed phone books to obtain local listings for businesses. Frankly, I can't remember the last time I used my own phone book (though that doesn't keep me from receiving one at my doorstep seemingly every week). You certainly want to be found in Google Maps, but it's also a good idea to make sure you're listed on the web in places like:

- YellowPages.com
- SuperPages.com
- SmartPages.com
- CitySearch
- Ask.com's Ask City
- MerchantCircle.com
- Local.com

The online directories allow companies to attract new customers and establish brands by giving potential customers information about their business. Not only do they let businesses attract new local customers, but they also provide a means for reaching potential customers around the world.

The Mobile Market

According to the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA), there are about 4.1 billion mobile users. If your business is well documented in online directories, you will have a better shot at reaching them.

By giving customers information like maps, driving directions, etc., you can help initiate the buying process for the customer.

Unlike traditional phone directories, online directories let you update your information as needed. This keeps your listings current. If your info is not current, you may be losing potential customers.

Most listings are free, though some charge to include additional features like company logos, pictures, longer descriptions, etc.
