What Small Business Owners Are Being Cautious About

Survey Looks at Confidence and Concerns

Administaff released the results of its most recent Business Confidence Survey, and the findings are interesting. Here are the biggest takeaways from the information:

- The economy tops concerns for 2009, but other issues loom large thereafter

- 41% expect increase in sales in the last half of 2009

- Employment and compensation levels stabilize

Over 58% of small business owners expect an economic turnaround next year, and 14% expect it by the end of this year. The same amount think it will happen in 2011 or later, according to the survey results.

83% of respondents listed the economy as their biggest concern for this year, followed by 53% who listed healthcare reform, 44% who said controlling operating costs, and 33% saying rising healthcare costs.

For 2010 and later, the economy became less of a concern at 36 percent. The biggest concerns for that time period at 55 percent were about potential tax increases and the effect of government expansion on business. 50 percent listed the Federal deficit.

Paul Sarvadi "Throughout America’s history, the entrepreneurial spirit has overcome obstacles and capitalized on opportunities, and our current economic setting is no exception," says Paul J. Sarvadi, Administaff's chairman and CEO. "Small and medium-sized businesses are battling through the challenges of the recession and appear to be preparing for a recovery in 2010."

The findings indicate that respondents are still cautious about management of current staff and compensation plans. 60% of participants said they are maintaining current staffing levels, while 23% are adding new positions.

68% of participants expect to maintain employee compensation at current levels for the remainder of this year and 10% plan increases, while 6% expect decreases.

Pretty accurate

As a small business owner with a safety and security web site, I think your findings are fairly accurate. My concerns stack up pretty much the same. Thanks, Chris.
