Using Apps on Your Facebook Page for Engaging with Customers

Lots of Possibilities

First off, if you run a business, you have to acknowledge how important Facebook is. It continues to grow rapidly, and is getting connected with more and more websites, applications and devices. Even Nintendo just launched Facebook Connect integration with its portable DSi device.

Secondly, you need to recognize the importance of operating a Facebook Page. This is a valuable tool to keep your brand in the news feeds of your customers. There are ways to make it easier for customers to find you Facebook Page. Check out the Fan box that you can stick on your site (with a variety of formats). People can even sign up to become a fan of you page ith a simple text message.

InsideFacebook has a fantastic post about 8 "best practices" for retailers on Facebook pages. You should check it out. It goes into detail about:

1. Making shopping more social
2. Engaging customers
3. Enhancing your page
4. Rewarding customers
5. Partnering with causes customers care about
6. Boosting SEO
7. Bringing the conversation offline
8. Keeping it simple

Engaging customers and enhancing your page can (and should) go hand in hand.  The InsideFacebook post talks about including apps on your page. That's a great way to engage customers and make your page worth visiting to them. The post looks at an app used by American Eagle that lets users send "virtual kisses" to their Facebook friends.

Kiss and Tell

Yes, these kinds of "gifts" are kind of dumb to some people, but as a Facebook user, let me assure you that people do use them all the time. "It’s just not enough to build a Facebook Page and expect viral growth," says IFB's Jessica Lee. "Successful pages are complemented with applications, social ads, etc. that can point fans and their friends (your potential fans) back to your page."

Facebook lets you chat with users within apps too. You can probably find some value in this feature. Justin.tv recently launched a live streaming video app that lets users watch video from right within your Facebook page.

Look at the Facebook App Directory. You can get an idea of the potential that is out there. Some apps have opportunities within them too.

Hopefully you're not ignoring Facebook. But even if you are participating on the social network, you might not want to ignore the opportunities that come with apps either.

Pages Great -- Groups Not

This is all great information, but I've concluded that Facebook cares more about enhancing its Pages over its Groups. I run a non-profit and added a Facepage Group instead of a Page so our members could discuss topics. I've noticed that you cannot add any of the enhancements provided for the Pages to the Groups. This is very frustrating. Anybody know why?

Facebook Apps

Building a facebook application is not as easy as it sounds.  A small business owner should understand application development, testing, etc. to make sure that they have a strong application before depoyment.  There are many applications on facebook that do not work at all - they just break.  This will give people a bad "feeling" about your application if you do not use it properly...

We've built several applications for facebook.

Pet Battle  (http://petbattle.socialoutlaw.com)

Cutest Kiddo (http://cutestkiddo.socialoutlaw.com)

These applications which are very simple applications have taken almost 5 months of programming and testing - mostly testing due to the quirkyness of the FB application interface.

Thanks...

I've been using FaceBook to connect with potential customers for my safety and security web site for quite some time. I guess it's time to set up a FaceBook page for the website and give my customers some interesting apps. Thanks, Chris.

I agree w/ level of knowledge needed

I agree that creating/ designing and implementing a facebook app isn't near as easy as it sounds. There are many many steps to creating a useful interactive and compliant app!

I have created several and the amount of time and effort that goes into it isn't necessarily worth the outcome.

I find most of the apps totally annoying

And even childish. I ignore most of the invitations I get to use apps on Facebook, and now it has started on Twitter also. I prefer a professional newsletter type of thing to most of the apps available.

Apps are great Opps

Apps are great opportunities for users to create infomation and research utilities for ordinary consumers, while ensuring the creation of a niche market for future products. A few more information Apps need to be developed which are geared towards educational selling of products and services.
