"Mums" Have Huge Online Influence, Says comScore

Heavy visitation of retail sites

Unless some data you've managed to gather says differently, the odds seem good that a number of visitors to your small business site are "mums."  comScore recently ran a study in the U.K. and found that women between the ages of 25 and 54 who have children consistently visit retail sites.

comScore's mums were particularly likely to visit sites hawking toys (32 percent more so than the average Internet user).  Next on the list was the fragrances/cosmetics category (30 percent), followed by kids' entertainment (28 percent), shipping (26 percent), and food (19 percent).

Mike Read, comScore Europe's SVP and managing director, said in a statement, "It's clear from their heavy visitation of retail sites that mums represent an important shopping segment, so it is critical for marketers and retailers to understand how to reach this audience online and influence their spending behavior - both online and offline."

Read also mentioned, "Mums in the U.K. not only spend a great deal of time online each month, but they also control the purse strings for many families."

Even if a lot of the people who walk into your store or place orders online are men, then, it's possible that they've been pointed in your direction by their wives.  And it's possible that more of them will wind up patronizing your business if you do a better job of catering to these women with children.

Disappointed

I was disappointed to see that jewellery was not listed as one of the sites visited by mums. Does not bode well for us selling jewellery and gifts. Perhaps this one sector where the Dads do most of the buying!!

Mums

Interesting article in that this helps confirm something that I have noticed with my line of work a while back. I do architectural design work for mostly private homes. On the whole with my customers the man in the relationship takes a back seat when it comes to decisions about the home. Often the wifes/mums have the final say although I do try to take a design brief with both people in the room.

This also does mean I need to adjust my site to be viewed more favorably from the mums point of view, which again it's the mums who tend to be doing the initial research when it comes to finding a design service.

Mom Demographic

Definitely a good idea to optimize user interfaces for this demographic.  I would imagine that using softer colors and making pages very simplistic and easy to navigate would have a huge impact on conversions.
