David Cameron Talks Gov't Contracts, Small Business

Wants a better relationship

David Cameron, the leader of the UK's Conservative Party, said a few things this weekend that should interest small business owners.  Cameron essentially stated that he's in favor of giving more government contracts to small businesses, and named a couple of steps that he'd like to take towards that end.

David CameronAs reported in a Forum of Private Business press release, Cameron said during a stop in Northwich, "The Government gives so many of its contracts to big businesses and not enough to small firms.  There are just too many hoops they have to jump through at the moment."

Cameron then identified one potential change, continuing, "A passport system would mean that, once you have passed the test showing you can do government work, the opportunities would be more available."

Also, it seems that Cameron would like to change the nature of what've traditionally been bureaucratic, paperwork-oriented processes.  "Awarding bodies need to have more of an entrepreneurial feel," he said.  "This requires a cultural change that comes from leadership, comes from talking about these things and understanding them, rather than just passing a law."

As always, we'll try to stay politically neutral, but these might at least be a few things worth keeping in mind when elections come around in the U.K.

Government contracts

This would be welcomed particularly from smaller architectural design firms. The current system of qualifying is a full time job, simply not an option for capable smaller practices. Time and time again large design practices with full time marketing staff get the contracts.

Larger contracts needs more resources however smaller contracts can easily be handled by suitably qualified and insured design practices and more than likely the person selling the service and taking the brief will also be the person running the project.
