Do you rank in the search engines for your brand name? It would appear that it is more important than ever to do so based on information that Compete has compiled.
More and more people are using search to get to their destination sites even if they know exactly where they are going. For example, if they're going to YouTube, they'll search for YouTube instead of just typing YouTube.com in their address bar.
While it is certainly a good idea to have a well-branded domain name (though this is not always possible), it seems to matter less these days, as people would just as soon search for your brand name than go straight to your domain anyway.

These clearly show that people know exactly where they want to go, but for some reason, they're just using the search box to get there instead of the address bar. Search is becoming navigation. That means SEO is very important (not that it wasn't already).
If you've been slacking on your search marketing efforts. This data is something to consider. Granted, when you're a small business on the web, you can't expect all potential customers to know who you are before they find you. However, existing customers that may return, may just search for your brand if you have given them a positive experience in the past.

Branding is very important, when customers remembers the name of your business. It would be poor if they typed in West Coast Vinyl for our service and you don't see us.

All good points indeed but for small businesses it's a different ball game and they don't have enough customers to be content with that 'brand' outlook. They're usually scrabbling around for crumbs from the rich man's table and still need to focus and make sure that they're found primarily for keyphrases about WHAT THEY DO!
