Social Media Can Drive Your Search Success

Sharing Leads to Links

In case you haven't figured it out yet, social media and search can compliment each other quite well. Social media leads to links, which lead to better search engine ranking. On top of that, a lot of people are simply searching within social networks themselves.

Search marketer Lee Odden posted a nice article summing up the key opportunities of a unified SEO and social media strategy. The points he makes are that social media involvement produces content, three out of the top twenty search engines are search functions within social media sites, and that publishing in a vacuum is naive - creating distribution channels drives awareness.

Earlier this year, I spoke with some search marketing professionals about where social media fits into the SEO equation. Answers varied slightly, but they mostly agreed that social media is a great way to drive links to your content, which of course boosts your rankings.

Of course there are things you can do to make sharing your content (and getting those links) easier. Provide as many sharing options as possible on your content. Make it as easy as possible to share your content on the channels you provide. For example, if you want people to share your content via Twitter, make the retweet process simple.

In a recent WebProNews article, we looked at a retweet equation constructed by Shéa Bennett, who writes the blog Twittercism. It's all about optimizing retweets. You want to leave readers enough room to enter the characters they need to for simple retweeting. If it's too much of a hassle, they will be less likely to bother retweeting your content, which means your content will be that much less viral.

You may also want to consider "optimizing" for real-time search. Now, you can't really "optimize" for real-time search, because the very nature of real-time search is about retrieving the very latest, up to the second results. But there are some things you can do to increase your chances of being found in real-time searches.

You can do things like use keywords, talk about timely events, get a lot of followers, promote conversation, and include calls to engagement. I talked about these things in more detail here. Of course, once you get found in real-time searches, your chances for more links increase too.

I use it...

I use social media all the time to help drive traffice and build links to my safety and security web site. It's a bit time consuming but it does work. Thanks, Chris.

Cool things about it..

When it comes to social media what I like the most is all of the cool things about it...

  • You're more likely to meet people you might not ever meet with just a website alone.

  • Many young people are actually leading the way as they took notice of all the attention they got so they started small biz sites and some are now retired by 21 .. lol

  • You put something together, a niche site if you will and start social advertising about it and the search engines take notice.. you just can't help but sell.

  • I blogged something and within 45 mins or so Google already indexed it. Now, that's impressive. How did I know they indexed it so quickly? Cause I'm monitoring certain keywords and Google notifies you when it comes across them.

  • The real thing is the unique IP Addresses that are linking to your site cause you're adding content to other websites. Also, don't just talk on one site.. you have to be on several.

If you want to measure your efforts you gotta have a live chat system like we use. I can tell instantly where they come from, what keywords, what page they are on as well of course. Tie that together with an outstanding counter service with charts and graphs and you have enough tools to tweet your efforts into more conversions!

Take care,
Snerdey

I have to be honest and say

I have to be honest and say that I am still struggling with the idea if social media is really worth the effort. As an seo I feel that my time is better spent on long term links as opposed to links that only last a few seconds. I understand that it can product a little traffic but is it the kind of traffic that will produce a sale? I have yet to see any real benefits from it other than some fast indexing of new pages, but again this can be done else where. As time goes on I'm sure I'll find a way to make it work to my advantage but as it stands right now I'm using it on a small scale.
