eBay iPhone App A Cash Machine

$400 million in merchandise sold this year

If you've given up on eBay and/or not embraced the mobile market, it may be time to rethink those decisions.  It seems that consumers have bought over $400 million worth of stuff from eBay this year using an iPhone app.

eBay

David Gelles wrote late Friday, "More than 4.6m people have downloaded the Ebay app, using it to buy not just books and clothes, but also a Lamborghini, a $150,000 boat, and a Bentley."  Which is quite impressive.

Then, once you figure that some iPhone owners probably shopped without using the official app, and that a lot of people simply don't own iPhones, the eBay- and mobile-related possibilities start to look kind of amazing.

Small business owners should strongly consider running a few tests.  List a product or two on eBay, mention to a few customers that your site is available from mobile browsers, etc.  Although everyone will have to consider his or her own experience with this stuff, of course.

Then here's one more item worth noting: Gelles wrote, "The Ebay app, which has been available since the launch of Apple's App Store website in June, has undergone several iterations since its initial release.  [CEO John] Donahoe said the company would release an 'enhanced version' by the end of the year."

Buying over the Iphone is insane?

Are you kidding me? I bet half of the purchases were on an open wireless connection. Very secure "sarcasam"...
