December 17th is National Free Shipping Day in the U.S. That means that on that day, consumers all over the country are going to be looking for great deals with free shipping options.
While, if you can swing it, free shipping is always an attractive offering to customers, it would probably be a good idea to at least try it out on that day for a potential boost in business.
Google has shared some data about search traffic for related queries. "Looking at 2008, we see that search traffic upticks at the start of December for 'free shipping day,' well before the actual day as users begin researching participating retailers," says Erin Piper of the Google Retail Team.
"If you are a participating retailer, ensure that you are advertising on these terms early. And remember, while Free Shipping Day is an important event for shoppers concerned with a holiday delivery date, free shipping is an enticing offer any time during the holiday season," says Piper.

We've been offering free ground shipping on our portable trade show booths for about five years now. I think it used to be the reason for about 10% of our sales... I think in today's economy it is probably the reason for about 25% of our sales.
Customers like free shipping. It's a good business decision to offer it.
