Not for me...
Although email marketing is an inexpensive way to connect with customers, my research has shown that it is not effective for all industries. I would like to implement it for my safety and security web site but unfortunately this is one of the industries where it does not work very well. Since advertising dollars are few, I have to spend them where I will get the most bang for the buck, so to speak. Thanks, Chris, for sharing this research.

Email Marketing is Not Just Spam!
Email Marketing is not always the traditional Spam you think of and is really a great way to keep your existing clients and customers informed. I would agree that it may not be effective in the Traditional sense (SPAM), but your existing client/customer base will spread the word about your business and come back to your business for new products and or services if you take the time to stay in touch. E-Newsletters are the opportunity for you to do just that! Don't only do a sales pitch, but provide useful information to your customers so they will want to recieve every issue of your newsletter. The big difference with an E-Newsletter and SPAM is that the customer has the opportunity to opt in or out where as SPAM is sent to you without you making the choice to receive it.
re: email marketing for businesses
I hear this quite a bit when working with small businesses & their concern about coming off as spamming.
Bottom line, if you're providing some free info every now and then and not pummeling the customer with offers it can be pulled off elegantly.
Every now and then just sending some awesome new info on their products, services or success story of someone using them....something newsworthy that's relevant a free 'how to' piece of work, etc...should grease the wheels.
Time definitely should be spent on constructing a well thought out flow to their email marketing. As for delivery that's not something to get stuck on, going with aweber, getresponse or one of the other major delivery services should suffice.
At the end of the day, I think these businesses are finally getting it that it's easier to get money from past customers that acquire brand new ones.

Email marketing Tips
Best practices in email marketing demand communications that go beyond advertising, respect the customer, and speak in a familiar one-on-one style. Email is "the most personal advertising medium in history," says Seth Godin, whose book Permission Marketing set the rules that transformed email marketing into what it is today. "If your email isn't personal, it's broken."
