Google Reviews Get More Specific

Ratings breakdowns should benefit businesses

In most cases, increased accuracy works in everybody's favor, and the situation's no different when it comes to reviews.  Small business owners should be pleased to know, then, that Google Place Pages now allow for people to rate multiple aspects of a company.

Suppose a waiter horribly offends a diner by recommending a dish that's outlawed by said diner's religion.  Up to this point, the restaurant owner would probably have just had to deal with a one-star review on his (or her) Place Page.  Now, maybe the service score will suffer, but ratings regarding the food and atmosphere could remain high.

A sort of opposite effect is possible, too.  After all, if a small business makes a single tiny upgrade, it could get lost in a one-size-fits-all review.  But with everything broken down into different categories, customers may be more likely to point it out and praise it, thereby bringing in new customers.

Anyway, courtesy of Google's LatLong Blog, a pic of what a revised Place Page looks like is visible below.

Small business owners should be probably check to see how the reviews are shaping up on their own Place Pages.

Double Edged Sword

The line: 'Suppose a waiter horribly offends a diner by recommending a dish that's outlawed by said diner's religion'

May offend the diner and the diner may post a bad review, BUT how on earth is the waiter supposed to know the religion of the diner, should the diner expect the waiter to know their religion, I think not.

Why should the diner be 'horribly offended'?  Should he/she not simply enlighten the waiter and choose a different dish, then judge the restaurant and service on this?

This is where open reviews can be mighty damaging. I think this type of facility can be a disaster if there aren't careful appeal procedures in place and I can't see Google having the time or incling to respond to appeals, so great facilities for joe or joanne public to vent their spleen, but less so for the small business.

well said, open reviews

well said, open reviews should be given the chance of moderation before being posted-potential clients can be skewed of descision from competing companies fixing the reviews.

google reviews

i personally think this is a great feature. google maps is a good tool and as reviews grow will give people confidence in choosing a resturarant / business etc..

Google is pulling reviews

Google is pulling reviews from a variety of sources, classifying them, and then providing a review and summary of the sentiments expressed in those reviews.

google reviews

Reviews are good if they are not abused. We had a review section on our website for a time but found our competitor abusing it. I don't see this ever being fair for the business.

Review Improvement

This is a step in the right direction but reviewing is always going to be bias and abuse. There's no way to know if reviews are genuine.
