Google has made some adjustments to it's "Place Pages." As Doug Caverly reported, they are now showing more specific details for reviews. They are letting people rate individual aspects of businesses.
Another update that Google made is the addition of verification to the Place Page. Google is letting users know when owners have verified their Place Pages. If it is verified, there is now a link with a checkmark beside it at the top of the page that says "owner-verified listing."
If the listing has not been verified, users are now greeted with links that say "Edit the place," or "Business Owner?". The latter give you an opportunity to verify the listing if you are indeed the business owner. The former lets users make edits to the page. Obviously, you're going to want to verify your listing to prevent any reputation-tarnishing information from appearing.
Google isn't the only search engine that has recently made upgrades to its local business results. Yahoo has also done so. The company announced this week that it is now allowing users to find nearby places without having to give too many details.
"For example, if you are in the Palo Alto area and search for 'evvia,' Yahoo! Search displays the local shortcut for the restaurant, including address, phone number, and reviews," says Nitzan Achsaf, a senior product manager at Yahoo.
You can also do this for broader categories. Users can now filter results further by neighborhood or nearby cities in one click.

Since my safety and security store is online only, I don't think this would work for me. I'd have people showing up at my house to purchase items that I ship from my warehouse in another state. If I ever open a brick and mortar version of my online store, this would definitely be a helpful tool. Thanks, Chris.
Great addition to google
In my opinon, this is a move in the right direction. It makes it easier for local companies to be found over listings from out of state. For example, our company is a Jacksonville warehouse based company and we are often mixed in with listings from Jacksonville Alabama as well as Florida.
Can Provide 1st Page Placement
If you have not done so, you should "Verify" and edit your listing. My Google Map listing comes up on the first page of the Google search results in many searches so it makes this FREE listing a value to any business.

With Many Announces this December from Google, We can say It's Defenitly Google's Month. Starting this month, Google announced Chrome OS, then Chrome Browser for Linux and Mac, Google Phone yesterday and Today Google has a URL shortener.
With Google's new url shortener (goo.gl), This would be a great competitive to Bit.ly which is the main url shortener for Twitter. "Google shortened URLs are automatically checked to detect sites that may be malicious and warn users when the short URL resolves to such sites." says Muthu Muthusrinivasan in Google Blog .
This would be another 100% successful service from Google which is already combined in Feedburner (Goodbye to Twitterfeed) and Google Toolbar.

Concerning the response from the people who wrote, "With many announces this.." URL shortening is definitely NOT the way to go in this case. Park a domain with your city hyphenated with the main skill/trade. For example, "Timbuckto-Bricklayers.com" and use this in your submission.
Keep in mind, though, that ALL your listings across the web have to use the parked domain because google will ONLY include content into your google local maps listings if it finds 3rd parties information that also matches your listing.
