About four months ago, we covered a URL shortener shootout that tested the top competitors for speed and reliability. Now, there's a new rival, and although its abilities have yet to be measured, YouTu.be is almost sure to be worth checking out.
As its name should have led you to believe, YouTu.be is an official offering from Google/YouTube. The not-necessarily-bad catch is that it only works in conjunction with YouTube videos.
You'll have to keep Ow.ly and/or Bit.ly handy for shortening a lot of links, then. But if you're just linking to a YouTube clip, YouTu.be may be a better alternative. After all, there are few companies in the world with as many resources as Google, so YouTu.be's likely to be pretty reliable.
Also, whereas people may be concerned about what a different shortened URL will lead to, suspicious types are more likely to click on your YouTu.be links since they're more or less guaranteed to be safe.
So again, consider using YouTu.be when your marketing efforts involve YouTube videos. As for how to use YouTu.be, a post on the YouTube Blog explained, "[S]imply take a URL like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdeioVndUhs and replace the 'http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=' with 'http://youtu.be/' to get: http://youtu.be/FdeioVndUhs Plug that shorter URL into a browser, and you'll see it redirects to that video."

The shortener is exclusive to YouTube links (no surprise). Its primary function is to share YouTube videos and channels with friends, mostly through YouTube’s AutoShare feature, which syndicates your activity on YouTube to Twitter(), Facebook(), and elsewhere. and just like Fb.me, you can manually add the video code to the end of youtu.be and get the appropriate video. Youtu.be, for example, leads to the video I recorded of how the SF Zoo uses Twitter.
