5 Steps For Making an Effective Commercial

Google Quickly Demonstrates How to Make a Video Ad

Have you ever wanted to make a television commercial, but didn't know how to go about it? Google recently uploaded a video highlighting 5 steps for doing so, which could get you pointed in the right direction.

Have you ever made a TV commercial? Share your tips.

First off, the video is pretty much an ad for using Google TV Ads. I am not here to advertise this service, as the video does (it doesn't really get to that until the end anyway). While it may be an ad for Google, it does still go through some helpful tips.

Jon Bond, Co-Chairman of creative agency Kirshenbaum, Bond, Senecal and Partners hosts the video, which runs down the steps:

1. Who are you talking to?
2. Who are you?
3. What is your brand's personality?
4. What is the offer?
5. Time to make you commercial.

First, he says to ask yourself who your best customer is, keeping in mind that 80% of your customers come from 20% of your audience. Then figure out what makes your company special. Ask yourself what you're best at, then ask why that is important, and why that matters.

Then, he says to figure out your brand's personality and how to convey your message, in terms of making it compelling and unforgettable. This is where things like music and visual elements come into play.

Next you have the call-to-action, which should be as specific as possible, and convey the value that the customer is getting. He also says to find a memorable way to deliver it. For example, you can find a phrase and stick with it so that it becomes part of your brand.

Finally, make the commercial. Find the help you need to help you script, produce, edit, etc. This is where he starts getting into using Google TV Ads (which does offer resources for this). That may be fine for you, but you don't have to use it. Another point I'd like to raise is that this advice can be used for online videos, just as well.

effective ads

Nice article, thank you. I would add that the first four "steps" really should be taken before producing any type of ad or designing any type of campaign.

I often wondered what the trick was to making a commercial. The finished product always makes it look easy and your step-by-step points do to. It would be cool to produce one for my safety and security web site. Just wondering what the cost involved is. Thanks, Chris.
